UCSB Class of 2024 Discussion

Any insights to the CCS program, and UCSB in general? We haven’t visited UCSB so it’s hard to make the decision to commit, given the situation now. We’ll attend the virtual sessions to find out more.

CCS is an amazing program for the right student. Did you apply and were you accepted? If so, what major?

@lkg4answers Yes, my child applied to CCS Chemistry and was accepted to CCS Chemistry/Biochemistry (?). We like what we’ve read about it, but that’s all we know. Thanks for any insight on how to decide whether it’s a good fit.

I tried to request a major change but they sent an email stating “Due to the current volume of submissions, we are unable to update applications.” when do you guys think that they will be open to taking requests again?

@Kleumas: What major are you asking to change into? Most likely you will have to wait until orientation when you meet with an academic advisor.

I am asking to be changed into a data science major from undeclared since ucsb lets you change your major before SIR.

@Kleumas: UCSB limits the majors that can be changed into prior to SIRing and Data Science might have a limitation.
** According to the website, change of major applicants need to attend a PSTAT change of major workshop along with the following:

  1. Student must have at least two MATH courses from UCSB on their transcript before they will be considered

  2. Student must show that they are able to pass the majority of their math or pstat courses from UCSB in one attempt. Courses which have a ‘W’ grade are considered to be a first attempt; if the course is then repeated after having received a ‘W’ grade, this is considered a second attempt. If students took a ‘W’ grade due to extraordinary hardship, PSTAT will consider an exception to this policy with the attachment of supporting documentation
Student must demonstrate that they will be able to graduate within normative time**

You can try again in a few weeks or email the Stats department directly to see if this major is an option available as an in-coming Freshman.

I will do that. Thank you!

Does appealing a reject decision work? Are there successful examples of it?
If grades improved in senior year plus had Awards after application deadline, will an Appeal work?

Can you please share stats? Wondering about my son.

@Andy280: Appealing a rejection can work but you need New and Compelling information to make UCSB change their mind. Doing well Senior year is expected since all admissions are provisional. Awards, depending upon which ones, could help your chances. If you feel strongly about appealing your decision, then you should proceed.

Appeal Stats for 2019:

of appeals submitted: 718

admitted: 47

how do you know if you’ve been accepted into the UCSB honors program? Does a chancellor’s reception invite mean you’ve been accepted into the honors program? thanks so much

Has anyone received an acceptance packet in the mail…or do they not do those?

If I am appealing a waitlist, do I have a high chance of acceptance than if I was appealing a rejection? Also for anyone who has appealed and was successful in past years, any tips?

@calgra My daughter received a sheet of stickers in the mail today! Guess that counts as the welcome packet?

Is this the official thread for the accepted students at UCSB for 2024? I didn’t see many activities in this, hence asking.

B/w Congratulations to all who made it.

@hulahoope, yes it is. Although I think a lot of students jumped to FB, Group Me and other social media after they were accepted.

Thanks, @lkg4answers for the response. I haven’t joined FB or GroupMe yet. Will setup things there.

My daughter was just accepted off the waitlist for the theatre program this morning! She doesn’t know what to do! Any theatre majors here?? She fell in love when we visited from out of state. Any thoughts would be appreciated! Thanks!
