I think admission or denial depends on your personal story and circumstances, your essays and what you’ve done in and out of school in addition to test scores and excellent grades once you meet a particular schools acceptance threshold (Testing scores, GPA)
I have been accepted to Cornell, UCR, UCSD, UCSB (chancellors reception invitee) and my stats are ok but not excellent. I believe it was my essays, school involvement, and outside of school activities that keep pushing me into the acceptance category.
My son has been fortunate to be admitted into SLO, SDSU Honors, UCD and UCSD. He did not express an interest in any of the UC’s in particular in his essays. I assume he came across as somewhat quirky in his essays (which he is) which may be one reason why he’s been admitted to some great UC’s. I think UCSB is his top choice, so we’ve got our fingers crossed. But at least he’s got some amazing schools to choose between if he’s rejected! Only a few hours to wait!
Given our experience, I very much agree with you @hsparent13. My D has average (if not low) stats for UC (4.22 gpa 1220 sat) but her resume & essays are very strong (e.g. many ECs & leadership roles, 4 year varsity athlete, FAA licensee, 500+ service hrs, small business owner, many awards, etc).
The UC outlines in great detail the 14 criteria they use for admission consideration, and although I’m sure stats weigh most heavily, I’m surprised that I don’t see the 14 criteria referenced more in discussion. My D addressed all of the 14 that she could in her application (except for marked improvement because she’s only had A’s). So far, she’s been accepted at UCSD, UCSC, UCR, Cal States: Long Beach, San Diego & San Marcos. Waiting on UCLA, UCB, UCSB, UCI & SLO. I guess we won’t ever know for sure but I would strongly suggest to future applicants to understanding the 14 criteria as it states clearly they decision on more than stats.
GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!! I’m always sooooo impressed with the accomplishments I read on here from students!
@lakeshow23 , I want to be optimistic for you, but a 3.09 GPA is well below all the UC thresholds. As others have mentioned, there are always exceptions, but I would have to say that your chances are extremely slim. Still, best of luck to you.
I agree with really honing in on the UC 14 point criteria and making sure if any apply to make sure you elaborate on them when writing the PIQ’s and filling out the additional info section. I’d love for everyone to come back and post when they receive the rest of their acceptances as well as where they ultimately chose to attend.
