UCSB Computer Science Major + Housing

Hello.
I was accepted into UCSB, UCD, UCI, and UCSC… sadly rejected from USC :(

I was only after USC so I don’t know too much about these other schools. After some research and consideration I decided that I will be going with UCSB due to distance, location and opportunities. Moving on…

I have 2 questions:

 1. What exactly is taught for the Computer Science Major? What computer languages? What job areas does it prepare you for?

2) What type of housing would you prefer for a freshman?

Thanks! :)

Hi iiNsane,

Congratulations on making UCSB! I’m going into Computer and Electrical Engineering at UCSB next year, and although our majors are only slightly different, I know that UCSB is one of the top 10 ranked research centers in the engineering department.

My guess is that you’ll be doing a lot of research, which can prepare you to make new electronic devices, and everything you can expect for a computer science major.

From the looks on the UCSB reviews on freshmen housing, there’s:

Santa Catalina (also called FT): Spacious but HORRIBLE location (1 mile away from campus, so take the bus/bike to class)
San Miguel (jokingly the San Miguetto by older kids) located near main campus near most of other dorms (santa rosa, san nic, santa cruz, anacapa), 8 floor tower, relatively small floors of 25 or so people, social
Anacapa: two story, closest to the science halls
here’s what it looks like:
[anacapa 3d floorplan](http://www.housing.ucsb.edu/hchoices/reshalls-fp-anacapa.htm)
Santa Cruz/santa rosa: two stories halls,
San Nicolas:
Floor plan here: [san miguel double 3d floorplan](http://www.housing.ucsb.edu/hchoices/reshalls-fp-smig-dbl.htm)
Manzanita: 150-250 freshman can get rooms there, but i heard it was very difficult into
for your own/ not shared with lots of people bathroom: FT (santa catalina) or manzanita

less partying dorms: manzanita or the substance-free interest floor listed (but may have to share bathroom and most of the kids will probably all party together by end of year anyway)

Close to engineering side of campus: main campus dorms (anacapa/santa cruz/santa rosa/ san miguel/ san nic)

Have a wonderful experience at UCSB! :)
