I’m an African American girl and I am a big advocate for diversity. To be completely honest I am scared to be one of the very few black girls on campus … Should I be
While it doesn’t have a huge number of black students, there’s no reason to be “scared” at UCSB. If you grew up in a primarily black community, it might feel weird there, though. (I’m white so I’m just speculating.)
I haven’t looked at the diversity rankings of all the schools in California, but I wouldn’t be surprised if you’d have to go out of state if you wanted a school with more than say, a 7%-8% black population.
If you are looking for diversity within the UC system, Riverside is the UC with the highest percentage of black students at 6.6 %. It is also over 25% Hispanic.
The state of California population is only ~6% black. How do you cope w living in CA in general?
