UCSB Fall 2017 Transfer Thread

Guys I got in as pre-sociology. What does the “pre” really mean? Does anyone know?

@5HisLife it means that you will need to complete some pre-requisites at UCSB. What was your GPA? I’m a sociology major too but I’m still pending haha

@5nonnegotiables Thank You! i am transferring from a community college in state. I was accepted march 21 but i didn’t check my portal until yesterday.

@bmora101 I tagged with a 3.64

I was accepted on Monday! I got the admissions packet in the mail, I didn’t even check my portal because I thought the decision wouldn’t be until next month
Major: Pre psychology
GPA: 3.722
Major GPA: not sure, but I’ve gotten A’s in all my psych classes?
IGETC: Complete
TAG: No
EC’s: Psychology internship at a helpline, animal shelter work.
Personal statement: I think they were pretty solid
I also completed all the classes they have articulated at my school

To my fellow UCSB mates:

I have been checking UCSB’s admission page EVERY HOUR for the past week.
I am officially admitted by UCSB 3/29/2017 at 8:30PM.

Major: Pre-Political Science
GPA: 3.20
IGETC: Done
Major Requirement: Missing Econ
CC: Foothill College

I never expected I’d get in UCSB with this low GPA and with that being said, I wasn’t qualified for TAG neither.
I have maintained a major GPA of 4.0 for both previous fall quarter and this quarter. I guess they finally accept me because they see a considerably gigantic improvement in my grades for the past two quarters. That being said, I am definitely not losing hope on UCD (pending), UCSD (pending), and UCLA (still pending).

To whoever still waiting for UCSB’s decision! Don’t lose hope! they are still releasing decision on a daily basis!

I just heard back too!!

@invertedgeek
I just made an account, so I could respond to this. This makes me feel happy for you and hopeful for me. Same major and same GPA! with the TAU, my GPA is a 3.24 so Im very nervous and checking my UCSB and UCSC portal everyday! CONGRATS TO YOU, this makes me feel somewhat more at ease.

Hey everyone, just wanted to update this group and future transfers on my experience.
I am a UC to UC transfer.

ADMITTED!!!
They never sent me an email on the decision. On wednesday (3/29) I got an email from UCSB inviting me to an open house on April 8th, and I was thinking that’s weird, cause I haven’t heard back yet. SO I went to check my portal and it said I was admitted!

Admitted: SJSU,UCSB

Honestly I was in tears when I found out, I was so stoked that I got in, and being a UC-UC transfer I didn’t think I had a chance

Okay my experience:

As I said before (and in my name) I’m a UC-UC transfer. There aren’t very many of us, which is why I wanna talk about the process I went through to get in. The first and MOST IMPORTANT thing when wanting to transfer is to ask yourself why you want to. If you’re looking to get into a “better school” so you look more attractive to employers, want to brag to your friends that your in the top business program or what not is NOT a good reason. For those of you thinking of this, I’ll let you in on a hint: Employers, Med schools, Law schools, your future grad school, they don’t care where you went to school. Do some research, and you’ll find this to be very true. They care about your GPA/MCAT score, GPA/GRE, or GPA/[insert test for other post-bachelor degree]. In short, you want to go to a school where you can have a GOOD ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE and DO WELL. Many people get into Berkeley’s engineering. Only a select few do well, while a good majority do not. And this goes for every transfer/student; go to as school where you can do well.
But if you DO have a real reason, for instance, your school doesn’t have your major or you really aren’t happy at your current school, ect, then here’s my advice:

  1. Find out what you want to major in:
Do research, watch youtube videos, talk with professors, ect. Really have it set in your heart that you’ve found the best major for you.
  2. Look up pre-req’s for your major at your target schools, and work towards satisfying those:
For ccc kids, this is easy; they have assist.org for them to compare what classes coincide with others. But for UC-UC people, we don’t have this luxury. What UC-UC people need to do is have a baseline community college that they can compare classes with for both their current school as well as their target school. What I mean is that you need to look up the classes you would need to take at a community college in order to transfer into another UC. AND THEN, you need to see what classes that community college has and compare the equivalent classes to the school that you’re at. I hope that makes sense
Now for the engineers out there,
I believe I got in because I satisfied all my pre-reqs. This was not easy, and am taking an online class through a Community College right now, but it worked. You should show admissions that you are doing everything you can to get in, and will literally go out of your way to get in. If your school doesn’t offer a class that’s required, get in contact with someone at your target school and ask them what your options are. Start early, and see if you can take a class at a CCC during the summer (the earlier the better).
  3. Get good grades:
Yes it’s trivial, but for us it’s vital. Admissions gives priority to Community College students, and then UC-UC students. They will see that you’re already at a 4-year University, so they want to make sure that, if they do accept you, you won’t be a waste of space for them.

That’s all I have for now. Sorry this has been long, I really want to help people in my situation out, cause I know it’s hard and there isn’t a whole lot of information out there for UC-UC or CSU-UC transfers. If anyone has any questions for me, now or future transfers, feel free to PM me or respond here, I’d be glad to help. I’ll probably make my own thread after I get all my decisions in the future so more people can see.

Also this is NOT an April Fool’s joke haha.
GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!!

Hey thanks the time putting this in @UCtoUCtransfer789! Never thought about transferring to another UC since I thought I’d make ado to where I’m going but never know how it actually is. Definitely going to get a screenshot for future reference!

Admitted on the first day (21st?)

Major: Econ/Accounting
GPA: 3.1
Pre Reqs: Finished Fall 2016
IGETC: Finishing Spring 2017
TAG: Yes, but since I didn’t meet GPA requirement I believe I got in through regular admissions.
Applied: UCSB, UCI, UCD
Admitted: UCSB
Rejected: None yet

EC: I’m working as an accounting tutor at my school for the 2016-2017 school year.

I have a pretty low GPA because I attended this CC in high school and ended up getting C’s while enrolled. Even considering that, I’m honestly surprised I got into my first choice. It looks like your essays and extra curricular activities do have an impact on your application. Best of luck to you all!

@lekimbeo19 Congrats dude! I’m a Sociology major and I also have a 3.1! So you make me hopeful lol Did you do any honors courses?

@bmora101 Thanks man, glad my acceptance could give you some confidence haha
I did take the AP Bio and APUSH test in high school (got a 4 for both) if that’s what you mean by honors courses. Other than that, all my classes have been regular.
Good luck!
