Hello all,
I’m a student at a California Community College,
Comm. major.
Applied to: UCLA, UCSB, UCD, UCB (media studies)
Major GPA: 4.0
Overall GPA: 3.79
Prereqs: done for LA & Davis, 3/4 done for SB by spring
IGETC: Done by spring

Good luck to everyone! : )

Hi @katlovespandas! I am so glad you’re offering advice. Thank you so much. I’m aspiring to be a UCSB pre-com. student in the fall and am starting to get worried because I don’t know how important it is to have all four prereqs done. Due to a mishap in planning IGETC, my only choice is to complete only three of the four prereqs. I applied with a 3.87, which sunk to a 3.79 after this semester. I’m also hoping my age (17) might maybeee give me a leg up? Any input you have would be greatly appreciated because I’d maybe (pretty unlikely) be able to finagle something if not having that final class will cost me admission.
I’ve visited the campus twice and am absolutely in love.
Any thoughts you have would be hugely appreciated, thank you!

@katlovespandas / I just read on the TAG guidelines that a language class may not be required for transfer? That’s the final class I need to fulfill for IGETC that is keeping me from taking my final prereq. Do you think it’s more important for me to fulfill IGETC or my prereqs?
Thanks again : )

@“Comm.ingforU” Not who you addressed - but I specifically reached out to every UC you applied to except Davis to ask the same question as I have not finished my language courses (actually haven’t started them tbh). The only school that requires a foreign language before transferring - unless it’s a prereq to your major - is UC Berkeley. In the case of Berkeley, if you took three years of language with a C or above in high school, that requirement is waived.

Also, just so you are aware - IGETC is not a requirement for admission. It’s advised because it can help you complete the General Education requirements but it is not required. You can apply for partial certification and you will be all set to finish the language requirements at UCSB if you get accepted.

Berkeley does not require completion of language unless specified by major or you need it to fulfill IGETC. You can transfer using general breath without language, again unless specified by major - and “usually” the language can be completed at the UC, even if required by major. You need to check the major requirements for those details.

@“Comm.ingforU” you don’t have two years of language from high school, last term C- or better. That fulfills it.

@Ohm888 In her case as a media studies major, a foreign language would be required as IGETC or the College of Letters & Science requirements include foreign language. I specifically asked if foreign languages could be completed at Berkeley for CAS students and was told no by two admission counselors. Of course, the requirement would be waived if she has three years of a foreign language in high school.

I stand corrected. Media Studies has either IGETC or L&S language requirement prior to transfer. It depends on college and major (not every major requires it), but you’re definitely correct re MS. I majored in Media Studies and didn’t know that.

Hey guys!! Can Someone chance me?

Major: Communications
CCC: Moorpark College
UC GPA: 3.62
Major GPA: 4.0
IGETC: Will be done by end of Spring 2019
Prereqs: Will be done by end of Spring 2019
Gender: Male
Ethnicity: Egyptian
One year transfer student

EC:
Worked a full-time job
Volunteered my time at my old high school and created one-year transfer plans for juniors and seniors.
Founder and CEO of 2 businesses
Business club at my college
GPS (first-year experience program at my college)

Schools: UCB, UCSB, UCSD, UCR
I have strong personal statements.

@HeyItsNick and @Ohm888, thank you both so much for your input. I’m thinking I should maybe fulfill the languege req just because I don’t want to rule out Berkeley and I think not having it would make me unattractive to some schools. My main concern at the moment is whether having only three of the four major pre-reqs would keep me from getting in? Do either of you have any insight on this? Thank you : )

What CCC are you at?
What are you missing - a non-articulated course or just one you don’t have time to take?
Please give specifics.

I’m at Santa Monica College and missing Research methods in comm. My college does offer it but only at one time and due to class fullness and my unfinished IGETC I don’t currently have it in my schedule and don’t think I can

@Ohm888 ^^^

You have everything for all the other majors? Because UCSB says complete as many as possible. You will not lose TAG over it. I would complete IGETC, personally.

@Ohm888 Thank you for your help. I think I’m going to stick with the coursework I have now. : )

For any other Comm. Majors, I spoke with an admissions officer and was told that as Comm. is not a selective major at UCSB, whether or not the applicant has finished all of the major prep coursework is not a part of the admissions decision. : )
