UCSB Fall 2019 Transfer Thread

@bruins8clap That’s not accurate. The housing allowance for on/campus is more but it goes to the school but the financial aid would be higher.

But on topic of on campus vs off campus for financial aid, all students are off campus as of now because no students have signed a housing agreement. The financial aid office told me that would change in June when we do so.

@HeyItsNick
This is untrue information. Most students will get Cal Grant (cover tuition and fees), and 5.9k pell grant. That is it. There is no difference in getting more grant money if you put on-campus vs. off-campus.

@ilovemydog2019

Well your impression is wrong, sorry friend. This sometimes is true for private schools who aid package varies. But a public school like the UC’s, the financial aid packages are the same if you are below the 80k income level. The only additional help would be from school scholarships.

FOR THOSE TAGGED:

Why havent we heard back yet? has there been any tag rejections so far?

@bruins8clap As with other things you’ve posted in the last week, you are actively spreading misinformation. Your cost of attendance changes depending on your housing option and financial aid will reflect that.

@HeyItsNick

The pell grant is a grant from the federal government – not the school – and the money you get from it is reflected from your EFC. Each university has no barring on the amount of money you are awarded from the pell grant.

The Cal Grant covers all tuition and fees – and just to let you know as a disclaimer: the Cal Grant is not spending money, it is taken directly out of your package to cover tuition and fees.

So this leads to 2 last options:

  1. Loans. Every student is entitled to a certain amount of loan amount per year.
  2. University scholarships. Most university scholarships are awarded when your admission is accepted.

@bruins8clap

Let’s use the Net Price Calculator (https://www.finaid.ucsb.edu/dependent-net-price-calculator) for an example. Let’s put in some information for the sake of the example:

Parent Marital Status: Married
Parents Adjusted Income: 100,000
Other Income: $0
Taxes: $8000 (just a guess based off of Motley Fool)
Assets: $5000
Student Adjusted Income: $0
Student Other Income: $0
Household #: 3
College #: 1

Now, let’s pick living on campus. The aid is this:

Pell Grant$0.00
State and UCSB Scholarship$9,642.00
Work Study$3,000.00
Direct Loan$5,500.00
PLUS Loan$18,656.00

But… let’s pick living off campus, the aid is this:

Pell Grant$0.00
State and UCSB Scholarship$6,612.00
Work Study$3,000.00
Direct Loan$5,500.00
PLUS Loan$18,656.00

Now let’s compare the two. Does the UCSB scholarship increase or decrease?

just a side note: There are two types of cal grants, which are Cal A and Cal B. The third type is for cc which is Cal C.
Cal A- covers tuition and fees at a public or private university.
Cal B- provides a living allowance and assistance with tuition and fees.

Did the people who received the admission letter in the mail still have a pending on their portal

@drodrz13 no it’s says “you’ve been accepted!” or something really close to that

Question- we aren’t allowed to request housing until June 5th even if we submit our SIR, is that correct?

I really want to get into a certain building and am wondering if I can get priority if I submit my SIR now…

Housing is random and not determined by when you submit your SIR.

@HeyItsNick

Forgot to reply from yesterday, but those estimates just flat out misleading. There are over 24,000 students at UCSB. And they only have 2.2 million dollars in need based scholarships. So you’re telling me every student who changes from off-campus to on-campus is guaranteed an extra 3,000 dollars?

@bruins8clap I’ll rely on what the UCs say themselves considering you have no actual role in financial aid and obviously do not know what you are talking about. Thanks for sharing your take, though!

@bruins8clap Good luck on your decisions next week :slight_smile:

Accepted! *received mine on March 19th
