UC Santa Barbara announced that first-year and transfer students will now be guaranteed two years of university-owned housing beginning Fall 2026.
Prior to this, the University only guaranteed one year of campus housing to these groups, leaving students to either apply for a second year through a lottery system, or find other housing in the surrounding area. Now, the incoming cohort of first-years will live in the residence halls as per usual, but upon their second year they may choose to continue living in a residence hall or opt for university-owned undergraduate apartments.
This expansion was made possible by the two-phase housing development project for undergraduate students. UCSB began Phase One with the construction of the San Benito residence hall, set to open Fall 2027, which is an apartment-style residence hall that will provide 2,224 new undergraduate beds.
This is a huge improvement, at both schools. So many students attend CA community colleges and hope to transfer into the UC system, but the housing crunch at campuses like Santa Cruz and Santa Barbara has been a huge deterrent, especially when many of these students have more affordable options where they can either commute or live affordably on/near campus in the CSU system.
Additionally, having dedicated transfer housing on campus means that CCC transfers get to bond with their peers through a residential experience similar to what their four-year peers had when they entered. That provides significant value-added to the entire CCC transfer pathway, IMHO.
I’m not sure whether UCSB has been attracting the desired number of junior transfers. UCSC definitely has not, despite vigorous recruiting efforts, and a lot of that is because students investigate the housing situation and decide it’s not worth the stress, uncertainty, and expense. A two-year housing guarantee for transfer students is a game-changer.
It’s great news for prospective students! Hopefully they can eventually end up like UCLA which guarantees housing all 4 years although the situation is a bit different in that UCSB has much more housing stock for students in Isla Vista that is privately owned. I don’t know of any plans/promises at the moment to provide 4 years of housing but things can change.
