UCSB vs. Case Western Reserve University

My college decision basically comes down to this…any opinions?

Bump…any help please?

UCSB :D

According to US News, CSRU is ranked higher but aside from that, thats really the only plus in that school. UCSB has an amazing location. Its campus has beach front property (exotic looking beach on pacific ocean) and quite a large school. Much more school spirit at UCSB even though athletics atmosphere sucks. Also UCSB is a way more popular school and attracts kids from all sorts of places in the U.S. Finally UCSB has a great academic reputation. its still ranked above a ton of top schools and the difference in ranking is not all that big.

CWRU is like I said, stricly academics. IMO location could not get any worst as Cleveland is not that nice and also, CWRU aside from its ranking isnt known that well around the U.S. I might be wrong but I had never heard of Case Western until I saw it on the US News rankings as very well ranked.

If its only academics that u want, then go to CWRU but if u want a bit of both (cause UCSB is great academically) then go to UCSB and u will not regret it.

I don’t know about you, but I think 4% OOS and 1% international is hardly something to get excited about.

Case is considerably smaller (3900 vs. 17500), if that appeals to you. It’s definitely an urban school (large street running through campus) about 5 miles outside Cleveland. It offers a lot in the way of arts, and athletics are big (in Cleveland). There’s a little Italy neighborhood around the university, which offers plenty of restaurants. The campus is situated next to the Cleveland orchestra hall, botanical gardens, art museum, natural history museum, etc. Dorms are fairly standard, but the laundry system is somewhat unique (connected to the net so you know when machines are being used). The Greek scene is larger than it is at UCSB.

Have you visited? I suspect size and location should decide for you. Case is probably best for someone who likes cities and is looking for a research/tech school. UCSB would be a good bet for a thriving social scene with a broader range of student interests.

Thanks for the input…my main worry about Case is the lack of a social scene. I can deal with not being a party school, but I want to go out and drink on the weekends and if this is not a realistic option at Case just about every weekend I will be disapointed…also I am majoring in business, any idea where Id be better off there? (I am starting off as a business major, but its not like I have a lifelong business passion and a change in major is pretty likely imo, nonetheless Im curious which is the better biz school.)

From what I can tell of your posts, you like Case’s academic reputation but are worried about the social life.

Case is … different. It takes a special kind of badass to thrive in Cleveland. It’s very urban, and I actually love the campus. I could talk for days about my love/hate relationship with Case. As far as name recognition? If you remember, in 2004 Case hosted the vice presidential debate. Cheney and Edwards knew what was up.

Little Italy and Coventry are close by. If you’re passing through Little Italy you’ll see a ridiculously bad mural done by the CWRU art students. In Coventry there’s the Grog Shop for cheap concerts. There are two great art theaters nearby. Case has frats and sororities too.

http://www.college360.org/</a> info on the happenings in northeastern ohio college life.

However, I’m preparing to leave Cleveland for California (not for college). So take that as you will.

if you’re not a CA resident then I don’t think UCSB would be a good choice; you pay as much in out-of-state tuition as you would to attend a smaller more personal school.

UCSB has a social life (quite nice) however not as good academics as CW. Eitherway, UCSB is still very good academically. Job placement wise im not sure mayby someone who has gone there can tell you. I would defiantely place a lot of weight ont hat factor.

Thanks for the input…anyone else?

UCSB is Ballin’

Personally, I would choose UCSB based off its atmosphere, location, campus, weather, student body, and social life.

I have visited UCSB and its atmosphere is so chill. I love it! Santa Barbara is one of the nicest areas, and its location between the Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific Ocean is absolutely amazing. The campus is really nice as well. The buildings aren’t amazing, but the campus has a lot of trees and the views are great. The weather is perfect year round, the students are really friendly and the girls are really hot. Athletics are pretty strong. Everyone loves Gaucho soccer (National Champs) and volleyball. Basketball always does well too. Social Life and quality of life is in a league of its own. Where else can you surf to class, hang out with the chillest people you will ever meet, cheer on the best soccer team in the country, and party harder than every other school. Honestly UCSB is where it’s at!

Academics wise, UCSB has a great business econ major. It is one of their strongest majors, and grads are picked up by big 4 accounting firms all of the time. It truly is a great program.

Well good luck with your decision.

Bump…thanks for the replies so far…

Anyone else?

Last bump…

I’d pick UCSB.

Prestige is similiar and UCSB offers a better social environment (parties, girls, etc.). Case tends to be on the nerdy side.

I’d say UCSB. I have a friend from my school that goes to Case. It is all studying and the weather is crazy there. Cleveland, he said also sucks. I’ve heard so many good things about UCSB’s location and I think UCSB is more well known although Case is ranked higher. But if you want the overall better experience I say UCSB.

Have you stood on Euclid Avenue in February?

UCSB has (in my opinion) a great atmosphere, and even though it has close to 20,000 students, the campus is very nice and spread out (there are bike lanes with painted lanes and tons of enormous bike racks all over the campus). I’ve never been to Cleveland, so I’m obviously quite a bit biased. UCSB is still certainy a party school, especially Isla Vista, but it has some some great departments as well. If you’re OOS, you’re going to pay easily close to private tuition, of course depending of your situation and what aid you can get.
