UCSB vs UCSC for computer science or comp eng

My son is interested in computer science and computer engineering. How do these programs compare at these schools? Is there any difference in outcomes? He is being recruited to play a sport at both schools so these are his top 2 UC’s.

UCSB is an elite engineering school with a highly ranked CS program. It is known for a more rigorous, competitive environment, expansive theoretical research, and a lively social scene. UCSC benefits heavily from its close proximity to Silicon Valley and is great for AI/Robotics. Its smaller department fosters better faculty access and a more relaxed campus culture.

UC Santa Barbara (UCSB)

  • Strengths: Excellent faculty in theoretical CS, networking, computer architecture, and systems. UCSB’s College of Creative Studies (CCS) offers an incredibly unique, accelerated track for highly motivated CS students.

  • Environment: Strong research funding, but introductory classes can be large, and changing into CS or CE after admission is notoriously difficult due to impacted, highly selective major requirements.

UC Santa Cruz (UCSC)

  • Strengths: Excellent reputation in specific fields like AI, robotics, and human-computer interaction. Close industry connections and alumni networks make finding internships in the tech industry highly accessible.

  • Environment: More undergraduate research opportunities and smaller, collaborative class sizes. Direct admission into the major gives you more security, and the campus culture is known for being laid-back and outdoorsy.

Now if your son has any interest in UC Berkeley & were to gain admission…

He does not know whether he wants to apply for CS or computer engineering. How do these programs differ at both schools? If he starts in one, is it possible to switch to the other?

UCSB engineering has a smaller enrollment compared to other schools. UCSB CE enrolls about ~100 students and I have seen many CC folks speak highly of the program. Even the webpage provides a lot of information on the students below ..

For CE I recommend them ..

You and he can look at the course requirements and in-major electives for each major at each school. Compare them to see what courses are the same, what courses are different, and how in-major electives can make the majors more similar or more different.

For recruited athletes, sometimes the coach/admissions will tell the student what majors they can apply to, after the results of the academic pre-read. What have the coaches communicated to your S at this point?

https://engineering.ucsb.edu/sites/default/files/docs/23-24_GEAR.pdf is a link to the required classes for College of Engineering majors at UCSB. Computer engineering largely follows the electrical engineering plan the first 2 years, CS is, well, CS. The link above is for 23/24 but probably hasn’t changed much since then, if at all.

As for switching majors it’s best to have your son talk to an undergrad advisor to see how feasible it has been lately. Generally you have to have completed a certain number of units with a given gpa to be eligible which can sometimes be a problem.
