ucsb

My son just got accepted to ucsb as an electrical engineering major. He also qualifies for the honors program. What can you telll me aobut this school from a parents perspective? All I hear is it is a party school. My kid is social but he has a good head on his shoulders (I hope!) What dorms are good that are decent and close to engineering/science/math classes?

your son can get an excellent education at ucsb.Yes it does have a rep as a party school but a party school amongst really smart kids. If your son is a good student he will get a great education.

probably should ask this question on the ucsb forum…

D goes there and I had the same concerns before she decided on it. And it IS a party school. But its also a big place and there is something for everyone. There is no shortage of serious students (those who party and those who don’t). It turned out to be a really good place for D because the student body is pretty relaxed for the most part. D has found that when she wants to be serious about her studies, the profs and TAs are available, and her fellow students are supportive and not competitive. She came from an intense competitive hs, and she’s turned out to be a much serious student at ucsb because its a better atmosphere for. Almost everyone she knows would rather be there than anyplace else - unlike many of the other UCs.

She’s not an engineering student but knows many. It is a excellent engineering school. Alas, it is tough and many of the partiers get weeded out, so I’d make sure your son has self-discipline. I would also be sure he can handle advanced math and physics (sounds like he can), because it seems likes it easier to get in than to stay in.
