UCSC or UCB

I got accepted into both and I am really happy that I got accepted into UC Berkeley, but the main problem is that I cannot run there, which I can at UC Santa Cruz. I know about the whole “prestige” that UC Berkeley has, but I really don’t want to spend 4 years of my life being stressed out especially if I’m not doing something that I love–running. I know I can run on my own, but it’s nice to have a support group and actually compete and get better times.

I told my dad this and he got really angry and told me that if I don’t go to UC Berkeley, I have to pay for my college (which is really expensive as you guys all know).

Running is really important to me, especially for my mental health, and I don’t know what to do and I came here to seek advice.

Just to clarify, did you want to run in the school program or do you mean that the area is more suited for running around UCSC?

google Berkeley Running Club or Cal Running Club or Strawberry Canyon Track Club-lots of running clubs out there.

Have you visited UCB? My friends told me that they have a lot of running trails and I always see some pictures of them in running clothes on Facebook. It’s definitely not as great as UCSC, but it’s up there.

I’m not trying to sound like an elitist (in fact I suggest the school based on the person) but if you’re only reason for turning down UCB for UCSC is to run…that’s kinda foolish

You have to have some compelling reasons as to why you’re interested in a school that’s objectively worse than another. Running isn’t one (unfortunately)

UCSC is still great for a research university but UCB is a lot higher. This is all just my opinion, you’ll still have to work hard regardless of where you go. Good luck!

Did you check out their intramurals program at Cal? You may want to do that.

definitely go to cal because you can always run in your down time but when you graduate from a school by the name of "cal’’ everyone will give mad respect in terms of hiring and also companies would run to you not the other way around

There are fire trails for running up in Strawberry Canyon. You’ll be doing a ton of walking on the hilly campus anyway, so you may be inclined to do less running than in HS. I believe there is an on campus rec center at Cal that you may also find yourself making use of. Go to Cal in this case.
