UCSC Transfer - do i have a chance?

My grades are pretty atrocious right now but I plan on staying at my local community college in a suburb of chicago for another 2 years before trying to transfer to UCSC. Having said that, I went to university of vermont for a semester my freshman year and got 2 F’s, 1 D, 1 B. My grades as of right now at my community college are 5 W’s, 1 F, 4 A’s, 1 B and 1 C. I am planing on joining clubs and have suffered from bipolar disorder since i was diagnosed with it coming back from U of Vermont in early 2013. I also do volunteer work for state reps and have a job. I also have a 26 on my ACT.

Do I have a chance in say, 2 years to transfer to UCSC if I show vast improvement on my transcript? It is my dream to attend UCSC and has been for a few years now!

No ha your gpa not salvageable anymore you’ll probably be under a 3.0 and some
Oos transfer at some ucs get denied with 4.0s ucsc probably like a 3.7 for oos and ur in

Don’t listen to qaz1995.

Your GPA is salvageable, since UCs allow you to retake Ds and Fs. You don’t need an ACT/SAT score for transfer admissions.

Double check that you don’t go over the unit cap. I think you are fine, but it is worth calling a rep at UCSC to double check.

Can you afford the OOS tuition?

Yeah don’t listen to @qaz1995. If you look at his post history you will see he has no idea what he’s talking about and has no regard for anyone’s feelings except his own.

That being said, it’s definitely going to be a long road back, but of course it’s possible. Don’t even think about spending time on clubs until you can establish good study habits and consistently get As and Bs. Good luck.

Totally agree with @luckie1367. You could also see about academic renewal for that first term. Sometimes you have to lose the whole term, meaning the B would go too, but you’d get all those bad grades erased from freshman year. Then just redo the one F.

It is expensive. But you can fairly easily get to 4 As, 1 B and 1 C. That’s a 3.5, right? It’s only up from there.

Getting a 3.0 is hard to do I got one c and it messed up my gpa the entire time. 3.5 and above are really good students who try super hard but end up getting a b once in a while. I’m just being realistic

O your already at community college damn sucks I’m pretty sure your gpa from your first schools continues on the the CC so 3 Fs 1 D 1C 2Bs 4As and 5 ws that would be a 2.2 gpa(rounded it up) and if we ignore the Fs and Fs that a 3.2 gpa and 5 ws is a red flag to me

@lindyk8 Do other states have academic renewal? I thought it was just a California thing but maybe you’re right.

@qaz1995 UC couldn’t care less about Ws.

If OP can somehow replace or remove those Ds and Fs it wouldn’t take all that long to raise his/her GPA, not that it would be easy.

Ws sometimes mean that the person didn’t apply themselves during class and managed to drop before it got too in to the semester. And most people think that cs get degrees but it lowers ur gpa substantially. So the kids that usually apply to a uc developed good study habits from an early age and now getting an A is routine, bs are the worst and they do everything not to get them but their human still and get bs also so those are ur 3.6-4.0

UCs don’t care about Ws

I know I didn’t say they did but it’s a red flag too me I’ve dropped an English class because I got a D in a paper and found a cop out and took it. But c’mon man 5 ws 1 d an f in 12 classes attempted at a JC. And I love how no body cared about this until I commented on it.

Some time has passed he’s probably more realistic at this point. Cya later my allegiance of followers

We comment after you to fix your mistakes and poor advice.

@qaz1995 A W could mean a lot of different things, so saying what it could mean is pointless. You call it a “red flag” but do you have any evidence that UC agrees, or is that just your personal belief? I know many people who have gotten into every UC with multiple Ws, including myself with 7. I tried to decipher the rest of your post but it was useless because it is completely unintelligible.

It seems like every post of yours is intended to discourage others from having any hope. Try being a little bit more sensitive to the fact that these are peoples’ lives we’re talking about instead of just cynically saying they should give up and supporting it with an imaginary reason.

I’ve said it atleast 2 times it’s a red flag to me not the ucs so it’s not realistic to think someone can just flip a switch like that and become a A student. What uc did u get into what major and what was ur gpa. Oos or in state?

@qaz1995‌ I got into all the UCs I applied to, including Berkeley which is where I go. English, in state, and 4.0 but I had academic renewal for 5 Fs and like I said 7 Ws, which is why I like to believe people can turn it around even if they fail at first.

@music1990‌ is AR only a Cali thing? I didn’t know. Thx for info… Well, he can still retake for the same result, although a bit longer. ;

UPDATE: I just looked. Other states do have AR but music brings up a good point, because not every state may have it. You should check into it.

@lindyk8‌

I’m actually not sure whether it is or not. But I’m pretty sure he could still do the grade replacement thing.

Is your daughter nervous for decisions? Is she applying anywhere else besides Cal? I can’t believe it’s been a whole year since last cycle.

Berkekey, davis, SB and UCLA again. She was iffy about ucla but i said she needs to have options just in case. As usual, she’s cool as a cucumber and I’m a nervous wreck.

Ha academic renewal is a mockery of the gpa system
