ucsd and ucla..

hi im very interested in UCs…as a cal resi…
i have been this web site for a year almost…

my dream school has been UCLA for years…
my question is why are ucla and ucsd so different number wise(gpa, sat etc…)
while there is only 7ranking difference…in general, people who have 4.0 gpa, marked slight reach for ucla and safish match for ucsd…

Several reasons:

UCSD is generally perceived to be half a tier or one tier below UCLA or UC Berkeley in terms of its general undergrad education.

UCLA receives the most applications out of any college in the US. It’s in a popular location with good weather, good sports, etc. Because of this it can afford to be more selective.

Btw people who have 4.0GPA, if you’re talking about uw, definitely do not see UCLA as a “slight reach.”

i think because more people apply to ucla, that’s my guess, not necessarily sure if that’s right. and more people prefer ucla’s environment than ucsd(because it has no social one).

what i meant by 4.0 was weighted…

yeah…everyone thinks same things with me…
(good weather, sports, location…)

damit…

Sorry. Did you hope that only you would find good weather, sports, and location to be appealing? :)

Well UCI is 8 away from UCSD (UCSD is 7 away from UCLA) and the numbers between UCI and UCSD are “so different number wise(gpa, sat etc…).” So that’s why the UCs are usually lumped

UCLA/Cal

UCSD

UCI/UCD/UCSB

UCSD is in a tier of its own.

Haha UCLA. I’d say it’s campus is the best attribute. It’s SO NICE.

UCLA is ahead of UCSD in selectivity and reputation for three reasons:[ol]
[]UCLA was around for the West Coast boom while UCSD wasn’t. UCLA was founded in 1919, while UCSD was founded in 1959. After Japan’s surrender in World War II, massive amounts of federal research grants were poured into UCB, UCLA, Stanford and Caltech to build nuclear weapons, implement ARPANET, enlarge the West Coast military-industrial complex and, in general, defeat the USSR in technological progress. UCSD couldn’t catch up to the national research grasp held by UCB and UCLA by the time the Cold War had ended.
[]UCLA falls into a steady niche of application selectivity such that it’s seemingly within any Californian’s reach. The elite students in California will apply there as a Safe Match (or even a Safety) alongside HYPSM, while the lower-end students from underperforming schools will apply to UCLA because they live in Los Angeles County, because they are (or hope to become) a recruited athlete for the Bruins, or simply because of the brand-name recognition. Currently, UCSD (for non-Bioengineering) isn’t a worthwhile option for those who already use UCLA/UCB as Safe Matches/Safeties, and it gets barely any applications from out-of-state since it has almost no reputation outside California.
[*]UCLA is a more well-rounded university than UCSD. UCLA’s strengths span all the hard sciences as well as the social sciences and humanities, and has the best athletics in the nation as well as the best medical center in the West. UCSD’s strengths are in specific disjoint fields such as Bioengineering, Political Science and Marine Biology. Furthermore, UCSD doesn’t have a law school, film school, or Division I athletic program. Thus, UCLA will have a broader academic and overall appeal than UCSD.[/ol]

isn’t UCSD good for engineering in general? their engineering is the same as UCLA in the US News Rankings.
