**UCSD Class of 2016 Official Decisions Thread**

Accepted! Sixth College - Economics major (I didn’t get an email, just checked my UCSD Triton page)
SAT: 2080
UW GPA: 4.0
W GPA: ~4.5 don’t know what my UC gpa is though
Leadership positions, lots of ECs, very strong essays, 12 AP classes

I’m OOS so I’m surprised that I got accepted, especially upon seeing much higher stats from other people getting rejected. I will not be attending I’m fairly sure because I will have to pay $54,000 to attend and I don’t love the campus. I just got into University of Washington my state school and Pepperdine yesterday so I’m more interested in those. Waiting on UCLA (but again with the OOS tuition for a public school…I don’t think I will be attending) and USC.

Decision: Accepted - Muir College

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 1960, 620 CR/690 M/650 W (single sitting)
ACT: didn’t take
SAT II: 790 Math 2, 800 Physics, 760 Chem
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.5): 4.1
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): N/A
ELC?: no idea
AP (place score in parenthesis): N/A
IB (place score in parenthesis): 6 subjects including Math, Physics, and Chemistry at Higher Level and English A1, Economics, And French Ab. at Standard Level
Senior Year Course Load: same as above ^
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): N/A

Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): piano, photography, engineering club
Job/Work Experience: school photographer
Volunteer/Community service: volunteering and random community service
Personal Statement: The first one was about the challenges i faced guiding my sister who has a learning difficulty through her school years, and how i struggled balancing my academic and social life with her studies. The second was about how my uncle, a former employee at NASA used to come bearing stories and gifts and how id love to be in his place one day.
Other
Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Aerospace Engineering (but got into my second choice major: Nano-eng.)
State (if domestic applicant): US citizen but living abroad
Country (if international applicant): United Arab Emirates
School Type: Private
Ethnicity: Middle Eastern
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: 240k
Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): None

Reflection
Strengths: I’m guessing my first personal statement plus SAT II scores
Weaknesses: ECs and GPA perhaps
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: no idea, didn’t quite get into my first choice major so that’s a bummer.

General Comments: This school was my safety, UCLA is my first choice. Don’t know if i’ll get into Aerospace eng. in UCLA if i didn’t make it into UCSD aerosapce. What do you guys think, could i still make it into my first choice major at UCLA?

So I got accepted too, but am a little confused–said I’m in Eleanor Roosevelt, but I thought engineering was the Jacobs School? My understanding is the the six colleges are just for the GE stuff, that you don’t live in any of them, so maybe it’s irrelevant, and if I’m an engineering major (mechanical) then I will be taking classes in Jacobs? Obviously, I didn’t pay much attention to the ranking I gave the six on my app, and now I’m not sure what I’ve gotten myself into!

[] Strengths: Strong academics, decently strong SAT, strong AP scores, ample amount of leadership and concern for my community

[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Strong academics and EC’s. Had strengths in both.[/li][/ul]General Comments: To those applying next year, make sure you do something for your community, be a leader, not just for college but to build your personality. Not just having positions but having a function in those positions. Be unique, stand out in the crowd.

@ErikPTK think of the colleges like the houses in harry potter. except ucsd has 6. Each has different GEs and a different place on campus to live, but thats about it. you go to class with people from different colleges (except for your college writing course), but it doesnt matter at all.

Thanks for the reply, abc002. I probably picked the “house” with the most stringent writing requirement. Shoulda studied them more carefully!

[li] Personal Statement:[/ul] I spent 2 months on it. I started in in the beginning of Sept and finished it in Nov. I guess it helped me a lot to. The first prompth is about my stuggles on language (I am an immigrant) from the first day of school. The second one is about how I am a big sister and those duties I have to do for my parents due to language barrier and I ended it with how much I love my brother and sister. I like the ending a lot though. One of my best essays (another best one was the one on The Great Gatsby I wrote in my American Dream class…)
[/li]

[] Strengths:my stable GPA throughout high school, volunteering
[] Weaknesses:poor SAT scores, high school courses
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:[/ul] I definitely was thinking that I would be rejected, so I was a little scared to log on to view the decision. I thought I would be a supplemental info request but I did not. I got an email yesterday but I just checked my email today.
[/li]

General Comments: Am I dreaming??/ 4th acceptance/ my application was more complicated so don’t judge me by what you see here…this is a summary/ I really believe my PS made me get in, it was not that great to the point that people would cry when they read but it was very touching I belive./

For high school juniors, everybody has a hook in his life, you just have to really find one and be serious about it. Once you start writing about something personal, or even your secrets that you never tell anyone, it will flow automatically. The best is to start a PS early, not the week before you submit(lots of my friends are like this).
