anyone here with a law & society major?
If I were you and were dead set on CS, I would ignore UCSD and go to the best school that already offered me CS. It’s pretty hard for undeclared to transfer to CS and I heard that many people ultimately choose a different major at UCSD.
@SilverLining712 thank you!
Anyone going in as undeclared social sciences
@yataboi I’m not really dead set on CS. My parents want me to do Pre-med. How hard is it to get into Biology as an undeclared major? I’m also ok with computer engineering. Is it hard to transfer into that too? I just really wanna be a Triton.
@parsi7 CS and CE are going to be more or less equally difficult to transfer into. Biology is a nonimpacted major, so you can transfer in at any time.
@parsi7 If possible, you should figure out what you want to do in life. I know someone majoring in bio at UCSD because his parents wanted him to go to med school. Got some Bs and realized 1) Can’t get into med school 2) wants to major in CS but can’t change into it.
@DoctorP how different and less valuable is the Mathematics-Comp Sci degree? I’m asking because I was waitlisted as a first choice CS, and in the event that I was eventually accepted, I assumed I’d try to get into that major. I could attend UCI for CS but I know UCSD is more academically prestigious and I’m not sure what I would do if it played out like this.
@DoctorP I, too, want to know the value of the mathematics-computer science degree. That was my second choice major at UCSD.
Go to Cal Poly.
I asked but didn’t get an answer so I ask again…
for those who got waitlisted, you guys got the message to write a 150~200 word essay to be in the waitlist right?
PLS answer! Thanks!
@miniminimint yes i also did
@IBGuy101 @tennis7cowboys This post, as well as the comments two and four posts later, is the best answer I’ve seen to this question: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/discussion/comment/18292151/#Comment_18292151
I don’t think I can give a better answer than that. I can add that there’s no stigma surrounding Math-CS at SD (i.e. it’s not “CS rejects” or anything, it’s a math department major). My friends in Math-CS think of themselves as studying CS (not math) and look forward to the same internships and job opportunities as CSE majors.
Thank you for your post @SilverLining712. I am sending it to my kids (since they are not on CC!) So true what you said.
Are you and your friend male or female?
“My friend got in for physics with a 1700 SAT but had a pretty great essay and a super high gpa.”
Hey guys should i appeal?
Its like new info that i didnt mention in my app. What are the chances if it is like absolutely new info
How do you know the readers can’t actually see your race and gender when reading the applications?
Do you have any proof that’s actually the case?
“But Prop 209 in CA bans the consideration race and ethnicity for employers and public schools. Thus the UC system when reading applications cannot see your race. After decisions it will be used in the statistics and alumni scholarships.”
@DoctorP Thank you for the response. Go Tritons!!
@10s4life thank you so much for the advice. My appeal does fall into the category of tough financial circumstances and family problems combined which did hinder me from good grades and high test scores.
