UCSD Class of 2020 Discussion

UCSD vs. UCSB - thoughts? I am hearing SB is more fun

have international students received Admission Packets in their mails???

I haven’t received my Admission Packet, and I’m in California :confused:

Can’t make links but here is an alumni talking about that:

I don’t think that UCSB has a more outgoing student body. More loud and in your face, maybe…but not outgoing. Also, if you don’t like hardcore partying, you will likely find UCSD has a better overall balance.

I grew up in Santa Cruz County and kind of thought the same thing: UCSB is a nice distance from home while UCSD is far… UCSD is actually closer in a lot of ways though–it’s an hour flight, whereas at UCSB you basically have to drive 4 - 5 hours… In the end, I barely went home toward the end of college because I loved UCSD and San Diego so much. It feels daunting now, but that’s fleeting. I wouldn’t worry too much about it. When you get wherever you go and make new friends, it will become your new home anyway.

Persian classes are offered at UCSD: http://ling.ucsd.edu/language/general-information.html.

International house is also a good way to meet students from abroad and interact with their cultures. In I-House/ERC there are often weekly language circles that take place where you can just go and speak to native speakers of that language. There is also a Persian Club at UCSD. In short, there are a lot of Persian people (I currently live with one…) and Persian culture at UCSD.

You’ll probably want to play sports on campus vs playing in San Diego…though both are options. You can definitely try new sports through intramurals and rec classes at UCSD, in addition to lots of other things like underwater basket weaving. http://recreation.ucsd.edu/

ERC gen eds are not hard. They’re the same as any other classes/college at UCSD. UCSB is probably an easier school overall, but it’s also not as world renowned.

See post on “Socially dead” stereotype.

I don’t think non-white and non-asian ethnicities feel that out of place, but I don’t know. Without looking anything up, though, I would guess UCSB is almost entirely caucasian. Ok, I lied and looked things up: http://www.latimes.com/local/education/la-me-ln-ucsb-latino-20150127-story.html Sounds like they’re not as bad as I thought/used to be, but it’s about the same as UCSD…so…

No football at UCSB either.

In general, looks like you’re making a lot of assumptions and generalizations–you’ve already decided that it’s socially dead and people don’t like it. Neither of these are true. I convinced 15 people, many of whom I don’t know, to take 2 hours out of their night tonight to talk about how much they love UCSD (and they told people who all came clamouring to join in–we tried to keep it small since it was a pilot event). Remember: college is what you make it. You could have the same experience at either campus…it all depends on what you put into it and what you want to get out of it. If you think that UCSD is dead and has nothing going on, I think you’ll be surprised when you show up on campus because it’s not. UCSB defintiely has a reputation of being “social” (though really it’s for hardcore partying). You can get a great education, make friends, and enjoy your college experience at either campus–but don’t let your assumptions make you feel like UCSD isn’t a good option. If you want to go to UCSB then you definitely should…but it sounds like you’re not really giving UCSD a chance right now…

@retraction Thanks so much, this was very helpful. Going to admitted students day at SD

Is there a Facebook or IG page where we can see our future classmates? I was accepted into Warren college and I am curious to know who I will be dorming with.

Did you guys get your acceptance packets, I didn’t get one yet and I’m starting to get worried.

btw @wendybk by admitted students day, did you mean triton day, sorry - a little confused there

@Salutation did get the packet and it is a fun packet. I did mean Triton day - so many colleges call it a different name and I messed it up :slight_smile:

Also, does anyone know when is rush week?

@APA
Request to join the UCSD class of 2020 page and the UCSD Earl Warren College Class of 2020 page on Facebook.

Alright, thank you @IBGuy101

Rejected but got into Stanford
Fuck you San Diego. I’m bitter.
Going to UCLA though!

I was rejected to ucla. That was my top choice so consider yourself lucky and congrats on getting into Stanford and ucla.

@APA it wasn’t luck that got me in

@pleaseacceptme99 Getting into Stanford was lucky unless you had a MAJOR hook.

@Salutation I don’t subscribe to that ideology.
It wasn’t luck. An admission counselor didn’t look at my application and say “hey I’ll let luck decide this one, flips coin, heads, she’s in!”
My gpa and sat were lame but I can confidently say I have the best volunteer, EC’s, and life experiences they’ve seen this year. Everything from helping in the relief efforts of the Nepal earthquake to working with Doctors Without Borders in the Tete region of Mozambique! I wasn’t too proud to drop names so I mentioned that I worked alongside Malala who will be attending Stanford this fall. This isn’t even half of what I put in my application all while winning a national championship in varsity competitive cheerleading two times in a row.

I got in because I’m well rounded AF! All my EC’s were beyond just being president of a high school club and each of my awards listed were on the national level!
Please don’t discredit my admission based on two sets of numbers (gpa and sat).

there is a ton of luck involved in college admissions lmao. I mean, the admission counselor could have been feeling hella crappy and been like yeah this stuff all looks like crap. Congrats on Stanford though!

@pleaseacceptme99 congratulations on all of your hard work and success on getting into Stanford and UCLA :slight_smile: you absolutely deserve it!

@thejappster nope. Like i said I don’t subscribe to that ideology. An impressive application will make anyone sit up and take note no matter how "“crappy” their day is. Many people have crappy days but they still perform their job well! It’s their JOB! And thanks :slight_smile:

@eric2020 thank you :slight_smile:

@pleaseacceptme99 Forgive me. I had no idea, but Congrats on Stanford and UCLA!
