UCSD Class of 2021 Discussion/Decisions

Aww thank you. It’s my top choice too. Good luck to you too! It’s hard to be positive leading up to decision day, but when you think about it one college decision isn’t going to make or break our careers, unless its Harvard or something haha.

@h1pnand3z Yeah that’s true, but it’s so hard to think like that haha :stuck_out_tongue: I think I would legit start crying if I got a call from UCSD during their calling campaign

To admitted students; did any of you receive the UC For You postcards and letter at the beginning of the year? I’m sure a majority of the country did, but I just want to make sure that it was just some advertising ploy and nothing of actual significance so as to not get my hopes up.

I know right! Oh I have a question; since you’re a native to San Diego and you’ve seen the campus before, is it really as ugly as people say??? I’ve been too busy to visit and wasn’t planning on it until I got my decision, but from pictures I just thought it had “industrial charm” but I’ve heard it’s disappointing. :frowning:

@h1pnand3z Hmm, I wouldn’t call it ugly. There are a bunch of trees everywhere, and the campus is pretty spread out. It’s also really close to the beach, and there are some spots on campus where you can get a really nice view of the ocean - it’s super pretty. The library’s also nice. So overall, I don’t think the campus is ugly. Then again, I haven’t visited any other college campuses, so I’m probably not the best judge

UCSD definitely has… a charm of it’s own! I’m used to brick and mortar, 1800s buildings at my old school, so when I toured it this past summer, I was lil man this is ugly! There are certain parts that are nice, like the Stuart art collection, and the library as mentioned. Library walk and the price center are not too bad. And hello, you cannot beat the location. San Diego is america’s finest city, after all :)>-

GUYYYSSS I’M SO NERVOUS :((

@h1pnand3z I was extremely disappointed with the campus myself. We live only an hour north and I have never been on campus before. Old buildings (like 70’s era) and the library was very unusual and not attractive to me. I don’t know. Surprised how it could be so ugly yet so highly ranked lol. But, it has the beach I guess.

I looked back on the 2020 thread and someone there said that VIP tours, letters, etc. only went to those who were first generation, minorities, or in the top 30% of applicants; is this true? Is there still hope for the average crackers?!

Fortunately most rankings are based upon what happens inside the buildings. :-bd

Look at campuses like Channel Islands (former mental hospital) and Monterey Bay (former military base) and you’ll find some pretty darn ugly buildings. @-)

@h1pnand3z Nope, all us average crackers should start looking at the nearest JC’s :P.

You can guess at your chances by looking at the 2015-2016 UCSD Common Data Set. Just scroll down to “Freshman Profile”.

http://studentresearch.ucsd.edu/_files/stats-data/common-data-set/UCSD20152016.pdf

@BunnyBlue Thanks for the dataset! It says avg. GPA is 4…is that capped weighted, uncapped weighted, unweighted, or what?

@BunnyBlue thanks for that! That actually boosted my confidence a little. @wormholes I imagine that they report the GPA on a 4 unweighted scale. The UC GPA is rather unique, so for record keeping purposes, I’m going to take a guess and say that they report on a 4 unweighted.

@poliscihopeful7 Thanks for responding! Hmm I don’t think it’s UW though? The average GPA for admitted freshmen at UCSD can’t be 4.0…that’s like perfect haha

@poliscihopeful7: I prefer the Freshman Profile posted on the UC website:
The SAT scores are based off the old SAT. It also does not take into account competitive vs less competitive majors so being at the 50th percentile or higher gives you better odds.

GPA and test scores of middle 25%-75% students

High School GPA UC Capped Weighted: 4.00 - 4.27
ACT Composite Score: 28 - 33
SAT Critical Reading: 590 - 720
SAT Mathematics: 630 - 770
SAT Writing: 600 - 730

So I just found out that varsity team athletes get priority enrollment – well at UCs I think overall vs. maybe only the Division 1 schools (a UCI student just told me this). But since UCSD is Div. 2 instead of Div. 1 (UCLA, UCB and UCI are Div. 1) so I’m wondering if this priority enrollment is also true for UCSD varsity students (UCSD is D II athletics so it could be different for this detail) …

UCSD is going D1, I think they will find out if they get in the Big West in March.

I think this has already been asked but will UCSD call the top 30% of applicants before decisions get released or only Regents and URM’s?

The top 30% of applicants would be nearly everyone admitted. I doubt they’ll call that many.
