“To the class of 2023, I would start using facebook for college purpose like checking school facebook events, student group facebook page, and form a study group. From my personal experience, I find it very useful. A lot of students think that they don’t need facebook in college because they don’t care. The school facebook pages and facebook groups has tons of resources. Students will need to use facebook throughout their college career because sometimes if students need to buy textbooks or selling tickets or looking for department resources.” I kept hearing stories about student don’t use fb or fb is not my thing because they think they don’t need it. You guys will need fb to join groups and pages for clubs and students organizations or even greek life. It’s easier to message people on facebook. I hope you guys will find facebook group and pages more useful. I would also add your future classmate on fb. In the future, you guys will have friends promoting for students clubs and organization.
@j678jgpo how easy is it to switch to CS major, or any other capped major?
Does anyone know if UCSD offers “admitted student tours”? We cannot make the preview day, but would like to visit and learn more about the campus, academics, housing, etc. FYI - we are in-state and have already been on a regular campus tour. Thanks!
@Carynz: Not easy to switch to CS. You need a 3.3 GPA for the pre-req courses which qualifies you for a lottery so no guarantee you can switch. I see you started a new thread so this is informational for anyone else interested in changing into CS.
@Gumbymom…would love your input on this. S deciding between UCI (CHP) and UCSD (Revelle) both with physics majors…besides the obvious benefits of first selection of classes and guaranteed 4 year housing that comes with CHP at Irvine…is there something else we should be looking for?
@Haysmom: What are his career goals with Physics? Has he looked at the upper division courses offered by both schools to see if one school has more classes of interest vs. the other?
CHP at UCI also gives him the opportunity to do research as an undergraduate, under the mentorship of a member of the faculty, capped by a piece of signature work. For a Physics major, I see this as a huge advantage.
Just did one yesterday, so yes!
Son (OOS) got admitted into Warren. Did a tour the other day and he wishes he would have listed Muir first. Anyone know the pros/ cons of Warren?
My child got admitted to UC San Diego (Neurobiology) as a Regents Scholar. She also got admitted to UCLA (Neuroscience), but not a Regents Scholar. Is it prudent to give up the UCSD Regents Scholar for UCLA? Any advice on which campus should she head off to, given all other factors (costs, etc.) equal? I also posted this comment at UCLA 2023 applicants discussion thread. Thanks!
@ D4Mom Depends on what she wants to do with her degree. UCLA is ranked higher and is generally looked at more favorably by graduate/medical schools, all other factors being equal.
@LACookie - thank you! My daughter wants to attend a medical school after finishing undergrad.
There is no advantage in UCLA premed over UCSD premed.
Also biology major is not the best major for medical school applications. Competition with the major could bring down the grades.
UCSD may give some advantage in research, internship with local biotech industries. UCSD is surrounded by biotech companies and hospitals.
@coolweather - Thank you for your comments! Much appreciated.
@coolweather - if able, can you send me a pm as I am not able to? I have one more question for you. Thanks!
I wish that there were not a slant in favoritism, but the acceptance rate at UCLA and Berkeley are approx 50% and the most recent published stats from UCSD are 38%. I suppose you could spin those results as you see fit, but the numbers are certainly what they are. You can search for specific med schools accepted to and look at the accepted school distributions and see the differences there as well.
As far as majors, I would disagree with the statement that biology major is not the best major for med school. There might be other majors that suit different student applicants, and there is not a penalty to study in those majors. But I would say that a well rounded biology major is a wonderful candidate for medical school, particularly if the applicant just so happens to WANT to study biology.
True but one should not feel that biology is the only major at UCSD that will prepare them for medical school. One example is Global Health: bhttps://globalhealthprogram.ucsd.edu/_files/Forms/GHP%20Pre.med.timeline.pdf
@LACookie - yes, valid points. My child also got admitted to UC Berkeley. So, the choice of campus is really hard. Thanks!
Yes, there are definitely other majors that can prepare one for med school. Some better than others. And some med schools are looking for variety in their classes so different majors can be a plus. But in general, to say that biology is not the best major for med school I think is not a helpful statement, nor do I believe that any data exists that would support the comment. Just my two cents.
have any international students received the package
@friedeggsandham Yes, mine arrived a week ago
