I was accepted to both UCI and UCSD, and waitlisted at UCLA. I still want to go to UCLA as it is my dream school. Any advice on which UC I should go to (UCI or UCSD) for my GEs before I try transferring to UCLA? I want to double major in Japanese and Biology. For UCSD I am in Warren College and I received the Chancellor’s scholarship, but UCI is closer to UCLA and I think there are less GE requirements. Thoughts?
@madisonk13: To transfer to UCLA or any other university, not only do you have to complete the required GE’s but major prep courses. You will be expected to complete the same required GE’s regardless of which school you select.
UC’s only take Junior level transfers so you are looking at least 2 years at any university you plan to attend and priority is given to CC transfers over UC to UC transfers.
You should not go into any school with the idea of transferring since you will not make the most of the opportunities either school will present to you, so you should go in with an open mind and give the school a chance.
Best of luck with your decision and both are great options. UCSD could offer better opportunities since you received the Chancellor’s scholarship and with all the extra benefits.
@Kisking I got into warren for molecular and cell biology. So I guess the scholarship is not only for engineering students. How do u know it is 5k per year, It doesnt really say anything on the aid section in the portal.
Anybody know how the concept of colleges work at UCSD? Are all classes by college also or only the General Ed requirements? Are the major courses across all colleges? DS got into Math-Computer Science and we are comparing with UNC Chapel Hill/ Thoughts?
Welcome insight re capped majors. OOS DS admitted Seventh College but admitted undeclared. He applied to CS but did not identify a second choice major. Obviously CS very competitive and we understand transfer into CS once there is by lottery and therefore very remote chance. Issue is what other CS-like major may be an option for someone in this position?? He loves UCSD but going without a game plan feels risky. Are math majors, such as Math-Comp Sci also considered impacted?
I found this on UCSD’s Math Department site:
Q: Are my chances better if I choose a certain major within the department?
A: The Department of Mathematics as a whole, not its individual undergraduate majors, is capped.
https://www.math.ucsd.edu/~handbook/undergraduate/cappedstatus/
Here is an additional link to the all the capped majors.

Good luck with your decision!
@Snowtree98 has he looked at Data Science or Cognitive Science?
Thank you @YesEd
And @lkg4answers It looks like Data Science is also capped but Cognitive Science isn’t. I’ll mention to him. Thank you very much
accepted. international relations - political science (Revelle)
Kinda scared because of all the stuff I’ve read about Revelle, but we’ll see.
@Gumbymom
I have been admitted to UCSD and I am really excited to go. On the UC application, I listed everything that was on my high school transcript, including some courses at my local community college. However I took some classes at my community college that isn’t on my high school transcript, so I didn’t think to put it on my UC Application. I sent UCSD an email about them as well as UCSB. UCSD has not replied while UCSB said they would look at the transcript only after May 1. I have a lot of good options and I’m worried of committing to either UCSD or UCSB and getting rescinded. Thoughts?
@ilgcs: The CC classes not listed on your UC application, where they a-g courses that could be transferable?
If so, then you should have reported them. If not, then you should be fine. All you can do is what you have done and notify the schools about the additional classes. As long as you have passed the courses, I do think it should be an issue.
@Gumbymom
One of the classes is technically a transferable a-g course, but it wasn’t needed for graduation or UC eligibility. It was general psychology and I took it to just explore areas outside of engineering. I passed this course as well as the non a-g courses. I am still waiting for a response from UCSD.
@lilgcs: Does not matter if the class was not needed for graduation or UC eligibility, it is still a UC transferable class that should have been reported. Since you passed the class it should not be an issue. Just keep any email communication/documentation from the schools, just in case.
Hey @Gumbymom, sorry I can’t figure out how to PM you and the discussion I want to speak about has closed. When you get a chance, can you please link where you found this data about the 2018 class for UCs.

@Gumbymom
I emailed the people in charge of transcripts at UCSD as well as the main admissions office at UCSD. The transcript people told me that this could affect my admission status but said that a final decision would be made by July 1, after they review my transcripts. The main admissions office on the other hand asked me for an unofficial copy of my community college transcript, so I sent them the unofficial copy. Do you think they are adding the classes on my transcript or reviewing my application as a whole again?
@lilgcs: they are probably doing both.
@Gumbymom
They told me that they see that I took extra classes and that they will give me credit for them. More importantly, that said that it would not chance my admissions status. Super stoked to be a Triton!!! ?
@lilgcs: Congratulations and best of luck at UCSD.
Trying to decide whether BA Economics or International Business is the better major to do. How’s the economics department? Also, why are there so many haters with UCSD? Is it really as bad as they say it is? (hard to register classes, poor social life, unfriendliness, expensive campus life, poor housing, etc) Can any current students there let me know if this is true or not and if I should avoid considering to enroll here?
Any of you taking community college class in summer, to take care of some General Education requirements of UCSD?
Or, am I the only one thinking about that, to save some money?
