@tuannguyenn: All UC’s give little to no financial aid for International students. You should expect to be full pay.
Financial Aid and scholarships for international students studying in the US are limited. However, there are some resources that can help you find information on scholarships and loans available to international students.
-One of the most comprehensive sources for locating funding sources is Edupass which began as the international student section of The SmartStudent Guide to Financial Aid.
-International Education Financial Aid is a database that identifies scholarship opportunities and banks that have loan programs for which international students qualify.
-The International Education Finance Corporation offers loans to international students with a co-signer who is a US citizen.
@Gumbymom Thank you for the information! In fact, I do expect to fully pay for my tuition and fees. I’m curious because I’ve seen UCSC offer quite a good amount of scholarships to International students, but it was not the case for the other UC’s. However, I’m just talking about the scholarships that are coming directly from the school, not the outside sources, and it seems to me that UC’s don’t like to offer scholarships to International students
@tuannguyenn: The UC’s give little merit aid even to in-state students. Usually only the top 1-2% of applicants get the Regents/Chancellor scholarships. The UC’s give good need-based aid for instate students which is a combination of Federal grants/Cal Grants and Blue and Gold scholarship aid.
@mattkarzi did you update your app before end of March deadline by removing that course? I had to withdraw from one of courses as well which is considered a pre-req for psych (Chemistry 1A), however I did update my app mid March. A previous poster indicated that if you updated your application in time you are good. I still need to call the admissions office to confirm.
@mattkarzi - I had a friend who was in a similar situation last year. She had her admission revoked, took the class over the summer, appealed, and they let her in. It’s extremely stressful because they won’t send you your acceptance until early/mid September (at least last year), but it did eventually work.
ACCEPTED! Second Choice: ICAM. Didn’t get accepted for the major CS at any of the schools I applied to. UCSD was the only college I applied to with a non-CS major as my second.
GPA: 3.75
Pre-reqs: None for CS. Completed up to Trig(precalc II) for math
A.A. General Studies: Social & Behavioral Science at CC
IGETC: will be complete once I pass Spr2017
ECs: Work-Study for Campus Art Dept.
Volunteer with historical reenactment society.
Lots of working full-time retail (not put on Application).
Built & maintained website for a game convention.
APPLIED: UCSD, UCLA, UCB, UCI, UCSB
ACCEPTED: UCSD: ICAM
XTRA CIRCUMSTANCE: Highschool Drop-Out who has been attending CC part-time/on-and-off since I was 17. Now I’m 26. Said as much in my essay.
I feel like I am a complete lucky fluke and I hope I’m not the only person 24+ at school. (School statistics say less than 8% of students are 24+ yikes.)
I planned to take a psych class in my application for spring quarter. I am currently taking a psych class that is different from the one I planned in my app for spring quarter. I have contacted admissions and they said that I can’t report anymore academic changes. They said they’ll note the differences when they actually get my transcript.
Does anyone know if I’m screwed? My contract is like all data reported in my app will be checked with my transcripts and any inconsistencies will result in the cancellation of my admission. Neither of the psych classes are prereqs or major requirements or anything like that for what it’s worth.
anyone know if it’s possible to bargain for more grant aid?
i got into berkeley and they’re offering me the chance to sign up for alumni scholarships and stuff like that… is it possible to call UCSD admissions and mention that so they up the aid or is that a no-no?
@otoribashi: UC’s do not negotiate their FA. You have been selected to sign up for the Alumni Scholarship at UCB but it does not mean you will receive it. UC’s give little merit aid, most of their FA is need-based. If you need more FA, you would have to prove the FASFA is wrong.
UCSD awards financial aid based on need. Need-based financial aid reduces barriers to higher education for students and families who could not otherwise afford college costs. This need-based packaging philosophy assures that:
Students with similar circumstances are treated equally.
“Need” is the only criteria used to award most undergraduate financial aid (only about 4% of total financial aid funds available are not based solely on need)
Financial need is the difference between UCSD’s budget (estimated cost of attendance) and your expected family contribution:
Cost of attendance minus your expected family contribution equals financial need
Note: Non-California Residents pay Non-Resident Supplemental Tuition (currently estimated at $24,708 annually) in addition to charge paid by in-state students. The university is unable to provide university grant or scholarship support for this additional tuition cost included in the financial need. Federal loans, which must be repaid by you or your family, may help cover some or all of this cost. Any remaining amount remains the family’s responsibility.
To all in this group, particularly @LynAmmo@MiniGrace11 and especially @blackonyx , thank you so much for the help through this crazy time. I called UCSD and they gave me the reason. There is a course in question which my school shows on IGETC, but isnt in the approved programs at UCSD. That, among other things gave me a strong reason for appeal. I can’t thank this group enough for the advice and support. I hope to be posting good news in the near future, but worst case scenario, I feel I am a strong candidate for admittance next year.
@gumbymom yes i know what need-based means, my EFC is 0 and im a CA resident. my net cost still comes out at around $9000, and this is with no expected family contribution. we really can’t afford to borrow that much. i know the alumni scholarship email wasn’t a guarantee, you still have to apply thus “they’re giving me the /chance to sign up for scholarships/”. but at least i was invited to apply whereas at UCSD i wasn’t.
