UCSD financial aid appeal

Hi there. I was recently notified that I would not qualify for financial aid for the 2012-2013 year at UCSD for failure to meet academic requirements (i.e. GPA) during the one and only quarter I was enrolled there. I left the university not knowing where I stood academically at the time and attended community college where I performed quite well academically. I have been given the option to appeal. Under the appeal I plan to explain how it was during the quarter that I was enrolled at UCSD that I was unable to perform academically due to personal problems.

The personal problem was homesickness but mainly the death of my grandmother in Mexico while in the time I was enrolled at UCSD. Her death caused great distress to my family and myself and it was because of this that I was unable to perform academically. However I was wondering if 1) the fact that she’s my grandmother would not qualify as immediate family and 2) that she died in Mexico that that would cause an issue during the appeals process. I would have a hard time obtaining a copy of the death certificate to present to UCSD and I assume that that would also pose an issue. Any insight into the issue? Thanks.

You can mention that the death of a family member necessitated travel to Mexico and perhaps missing classes, which was reflected in your grades – or whatever it was that caused the poor performance. However, do this briefly in a single paragraph. Your focus needs to be on your performance at the cc. It shows that you do, indeed, have what it takes to be successful and your one bad quarter truly was an anomaly
