UCSD or Berkeley

I’m stuck b/t the two! Although Cal has better prestige/more opportunities, etc, SD has an environment(campus, socal, beach) that can’t be beat. I feel like I would be happier at SD, although I would miss the opportunities and stronger education Cal can offer. To people who have been accepted to both, what is your motive to go to SD?

what’s your major?

I have a handful of friends who chose SD over Cal because they knew they wouldn’t be happy there. I mean prestige matters to a certain extent for sure, but if you’re going to be unhappy for 4 years then it’s probably not worth it -life is too short for that. What major is this for, btw? Just think about where you honestly want to picture yourself for the next four years and where you can really see yourself fitting in the best.

Your idea of a “stronger education” is not necessarily true for all programs, and its less about how strong the program is and more how much you agree/fit into it. Your happiness and interest in what’s being taught will determine how well you do and how much you get out of your college experience.

Fyi, I chose ucsd over cal, and have no regrets. For me, logistical issues were the biggest thing though, like financial aid, being closer to home, etc. Its honestly a question of preference.

Whoa whoa, you’re playing Cal off as only offering a good education… First of all, Berkeley is the chillest city ever, the bay area can’t be beat, and SF among other cities are a BART ride away. Second of all, UCSD offers a great education too (sometimes even better than Cal depending on what your major is). In short, you need to figure out what you want to do for four years because both schools have a good education/environment depending on your preferences.

General note to OP: Don’t assume that Cal is automatically academically better than UCSD. It is wholly dependent on what major you are pursuing.

On the other hand, don’t assume SD’s environment is automatically better than Berk’s. Some people love berkeley, some love San Diego.

As you can see, the decision is a very personalized one, so while posting on this forum would help if you listed what major you want to do, the location aspect is completely your view, you can’t just take someone else’s

Regardless of what you do, you won’t have any regrets going to either school. Good luck!
