UCSD or UCI for CE

which is better, ucsd or uci for computer engineering?

UCSD hands down

really? ****ing damn it. my dad told me uci was better so i believed him and now i am going to uci. how much better is it?

UCSD ECE is regarded as a top 15-20 program, almost on par with UCLA, while UCI’s program is barely scraping the bottom of the top 50. UCSB and UC Davis also have better ECE programs than UCI, as well as Berkeley of course.

UCSD simply kills UCI. UCI’s not even regarded as one of the good UCs like UCSD is. I have never heard of UCI engineering being good in any way, not to mention UCSD’s campus is one of the nicest of the UCs. Why didn’t you consult anyone other than your dad when making this decision? Why didn’t you do some research?

UCI over UCSD? XD

That really hurts man.

my *ing hate my dad. i should have known that he knows nothing about colleges and now he just ruined the next years of my life. * you dad **** you.

**** urself, could have avoided it easily with research

^i actually did do research but he said statisitcs are stupid and are completely biased.

ripcurl,

I wouldn’t worry about it. Just do your best and you will be fine. How you do in college is much more important than the college you choose.

Here’s your solution:

Go to grad school. Then no one will care where you went to for undergrad. It’ll be easier to get good grades at Irvine because engineering is less competitive.

I’m also planning to be a CE and I’m hoping to get a PhD.

why cant u just take uscd now? is it too late? what can they do

It’s not as simple as that. Grad schools consider your undergrad school significantly, especially top 5-10 programs. Even getting a 4.0 at UCI ECE and doing everything else right may not be enough to get into, say MIT or Berkeley for grad school. That’s why graduate programs are heavily represented by top undergrad programs.

im_blue,

I think if he did well at UCI his chances are very good. I’ve seen plently of top graduates from small, no-name schools make it to top graduate programs. It is certainly not a given, but I’d say that if he got a 4.0 and had some research experience his chances are very, very good.

uhh…just because you are goign to UCI doesn’t mean that u are going to waste your life…

wbb: i already submited my statment of intent to register for uci. would it be possible to take that back? i am going to talk about the uci vs ucsd rankings tonight with my dad.

That’s not the point. The point is that a 4.0 at UCSD would go much further than a 4.0 at UCI. Obviously, you’re not throwing your life away by going to UCI, but you’re not putting yourself in the best position for grad school either.

Secondly, UCSD’s program would prepare you for a graduate program much better than UCI as well, i.e. for grad classes and PhD qualifying exams. I’ve seen plenty of guys who were top of their class at lesser programs like UC Davis, UVa, and even Duke, who are getting hammered in graduate classes. And these aren’t no-name programs by any means, either.

I would choose UCSD CE over UCI CE, but that’s just me.
