UCSD Pros and Cons?

Wow…I would have to disagree with some of the above statements mentioned. I transferred to UCSD in Fall 2011, so i just finished my first quarter and will begin my second quarter soon. I absolutely LOVE the school and everything I’ve experienced during my first quarter.

Pros:

 • New transfer housing. I live in Village West in the Tower in a double with an ocean view and just absolutely love it. You meet a lot of people in the building which is a always a plus! There’s definitely parties every weekend at the Village, but most of the time they do get shut down once quiet hours are enforced by RAs/RSOs. There’s also I-House right by the village! in terms of partying, it goes I-house then the Village. There are also study rooms across the street by Village East, which is a plus if you don’t want to walk to Geisel.
 • The beach is literally right across the street.
 • The community. Everyone is extremely nice. Plus, there’s PB and the Gaslamp district! (can’t wait until i turn 21!)

- San Diego weather! Who doesn’t like it?

Cons:

 • PARKING! The closest parking structures are Pangea and Hopkins. I usually park in Pangea, but if i can’t find a spot I can usually find one in Hopkins. It definitely depends on the time though. Usually during the day you’re circling the structure to find a spot.
 • The Campus is huge! It takes me 15 mins to walk to Geisel/Price Center from the Village! I’d suggest to bring a bike.
 • Sometimes the Village feels “dead.” Usually after midterms the village “dies” down a bit, but i heard its supposed to get worse this upcoming quarter? Usually winter there’s nothing going on at all. However, I’ve never experienced a socially dead weekend at UCSD.

I know most will disagree with my thoughts on the social aspect of UCSD, but these were my experiences and i believe it highly depends on the person. Don’t sit in your room expecting people to throw themselves at you or for parties to magically come to you. YOU have to put yourself out there.

Therefore, i would highly suggest everyone to RUSH!!! I LOVE the greek system. It’s a community within a community. I rushed this fall quarter and I can’t imagine what my first quarter would’ve been without rushing the fraternity I’m in. Finally to everyone complaining about not being able to find “hot girls,” join the greek system?
