My little sister was a freshman at duke last year as an engineering major…she went to high school in San Diego and couldn’t bear being away from home so this year she went to a cc in sd and is planning on attending UCSD next year. Should I try and talk her out of this? Isn’t Duke a much better school? She wants to work for NASA and claims that recruiting is heavier at UCSD than at Duke…can this be true?

Definitely. And dont get hung up on whats a better school based on just the schools national overall ranking for example, while UCSD does score lower than Duke overall, UCSDs engineering department scores higher than Dukes engineering department ([source](http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/grad/rankings/eng/brief/engrank_brief.php)), albeit at the graduate level.

ucsddddddd

Tell her to stay at Duke.

How about let her do what she wants to do? She’s obviously more knowledgable about her situation than any of us.

duke is better…

Agree with Slorg. Obviously, Duke has more prestige, but prestige isn’t everything. UCSD has a really good engineering school (graduate, but that generally reflects positively on the undergraduate program) and I’m sure she knows what she wants. Don’t convince her of anything.

i dont see how the graduate school should carry any weight in this decision. And last time I cecked, prestige means a whole lot when looking for a job post graduation.

i’m not convincing her of anything, just think about it as informing her of the repercussions of her decisions.

so everyone generally agrees that duke is better school (undergraduate obviously)? What about her statement about recruiting at UCSD?

Prestige only means something when the prestige is carried in the specific area of study your job is related to. Employers aren’t stupid. If UCSD is known as a better school for engineering, they’ll like students who come from UCSD better. All I said about the graduate program was that in general, a good graduate program generally means that the undergraduate program for the same area of study is going to be good as well.

thats odd because everything i’ve heard about ucsd is that undergraduates feel neglected compared to graduate students. is duke’s engineering program looked down upon compared to ucsd’s?

I’m not exactly sure what site I pulled this off of, but i remember saving this in a text doc a few months (or more) ago. Does anyone know what this is? I seriously can’t remember where i cut+pasted this from… it must’ve been from my time searching for colleges to apply to. At any rate, here is a bit of it.

Can anyone confirm that this is what it says it is?

Probably from US News? Although you can’t access that information unless you have a subscription so you must have had a subscription at the time you saved it. If you don’t have a subscription you can only see the top 3.
I was going by the graduate school ranking for engineering, which places UCSD at #11 and Duke at #30, but maybe this is more accurate.
