Help decide between the above options for Computer science
All 3 colleges have given direct Computer science
Am an international
Also have other options from Virginia Tech, Umass Amherst with scholarship
UWashington Seattle, Boston university (with 50% scholarship) and UIUC offers not considering because did not give direct computers.
Still waiting from Purdue and Michigan
Finally waitlisted from NYU
Personally leaning towards UCSD but please help with any comments you can.
Affordability yes no issues
Being international for us all are far so no location preference.
Only concern is the prestige of the place and later placement
Ok, but if you prefer warm weather then UCSD is the winner.
All three have good CS programs, with UWM and UCSD ranked higher.
Regarding “placement”: some colleges in Asia assist students in securing jobs at well-known companies. I’m not sure if that’s what you’re referring to, but that’s not how it works here. In the U.S., colleges have career fairs but it’s up to each student to find their own job, and graduates from all three schools do well landing positions across the country.
However, as an international student, your son or daughter will need visa sponsorship beyond the initial work authorization provided by OPT. Securing sponsorship can be challenging, particularly if the economy is weak. Immigration policy changes also have an impact (for example, just yesterday the administration put a pause on green card processing, which is expected to have an upstream effect on H1B work visa sponsorship).
In other words, your student should not count on being able to work in the US post-graduation.
Yes am aware of the recent regulatory changes.
That’s why looking for a place which is internationally well known so that if son can’t stay back in usa, he should have good opportunities at all other places.
No one here can predict what school will be seen as superior in another country. You have to know that.
In the US, U Washington is a 2% OOS acceptance - I’d put it at the top - and with your acceptances after maybe UMASS. Va Tech and BU are also very good.
In your subject like you mentioned UCSD - and I’d put it up there right after Washington and Wisconsin is well known too.
You can’t go wrong with any - but I’d look strongly at UWash and UCSD myself - but it’s going to be a country specific as to who is more prestigious.
And does the name alone help you?
You might also check the career center at each - who has done the best with international placement - the answer might surprise you.
I visit my firm’s international locations regularly, and my view is that none of these 3 schools are readily recognized internationally. Perhaps UCSD to some extent because it’s a UC.
What’s more important is which of these is known in your home country — and it’s impossible for us to answer this when you haven’t mentioned which country you are from.
Regardless of name recognition, the quality of US education is well known and valued internationally. So your son should be able to do well no matter which of these schools he chooses to attend.
As an international student, look at how the prestige matters in your country of citizenship and those where work authorization is easy to get (the US is not such a country).
