I have been accepted to Rensselaer, UCD, UCSD, Rutgers, and Northeastern. Northeastern and UCSD seem to be my best options. My intend major is computer science, and I pretty sure I won’t change my major in the future. I would choose UCSD pretty easily since it is a strong cs school and it is a beautiful place. However, UCSD accepted me as undecided instead of computer science because cs is a capped major in their school(meaning too many people applied). Sure enough I can change major when I actually go, but it will be hard.(I am sure it is not that hard, but still. ) On the other hand, Northeastern accepted me as a cs and cognitive psych major, which is exactly what I want to study. Northeastern also has co-op program, which UCSD doesn’t.
I am from Pennsylvania, so the in-state price thing doesn’t really apply. I don’t really care about tuition either.
I go to a private school, and it is quite hard to get a 4,0 GPA in my school. Many our graduates think their first and second year of college are even easier than high school. (Even for those who go to top schools like CMU) Considering all that, I don’t think getting a good GPA will be that hard for me. But according to their website, the acceptance rate seems really low…So Idk if I will transfer successfully.
Thanks for your advice on Northeastern though! I will definitely check on that.
It is typically very hard to transfer into a competitive major once you are at a college. I’d go to a college where you know you can study what you wish – so of the two I’d go for Northeastern.
csee is really competitive, with a cut-off gpa of 3.9-4.0, but maths-cs is not. The cut-off gpa is only 2.6, and their screening courses are things that I am sure I will be good at. (like cal and linear algebra) Though I do like the major northeastern offers a lot, ucsd just seems to be a better school in comparison. Thanks for ur advice though
UCSD apparently changed the system for students transferring into CS to be a lottery. So even if you have a 4.0 there is no guarantee. Verify that for yourself, but regardless, I’d go where you are guaranteed to be in the major.
How about a CE or Math+CS major? I can do either of them. Will they be equally competitive as pure cs? I really like UCSD…but I also really like cs. Northeastern is fine, but it is really just not as good.
I never went to UCSD. I visited San Diego couple years before and I wasn’t considering about colleges at all. When I say it is a beautiful place is more like saying San Diego as a city is beautiful.
You might want to contact the UCSD Math Department about the current screening process for Math-CS to make sure it is still the same since they have been changing requirements for switching majors each year.
I meant call or email them. The news about the lottery system for CS was put on the website just a few weeks ago, so you can’t always rely on a website.
However, CS courses are likely to be quite full, which is the reason that the CS major has to limit enrollment. Presumably, CS majors get enrollment priority for CS courses over other majors.
I also saw this on their website, and the requirement here seems to be relatively easy. I would do a math-cs major, which is not that competitive. There are many people/way too many people applying for cs, but probably not that many people will enroll. But you are right, I may not be able to take cs courses. Thanks for pointing that out.
Inside the UC system, UCB>UCLA>UCSD>UCD(I think). If I am going to a UC school, UCSD seems to be a better option than UCD. Plus, UCSD is in a better location.
Rutgers is fine, but it is probably the worst option. It is great as a state university, but not as good as other choices.
