The University of Florida broke ground Tuesday on an expansion of a student recreation center, while its employee center is seeking new members to prevent its closure.

The Southwest Recreation Center’s 40,000-square-foot expansion includes new space for cardiovascular and strength training equipment. The $16.3 million project, slated to be completed by next fall and funded by student fees, will also include more space for yoga classes and other group instruction.

“A lot of campuses are trying to do all they can to keep pace with demand,” said David Bowles, UF’s director of recreational sports.

ughhh… no one can argue that southwest suffers from overcrowding during peak hours and could use an expansion but I can already imagine the short-term misery and inconvenience that this expansion will provide for this year… i have no idea how this proposed expansion will not interfere with the current location of our cardio room or where the people who use it will go instead because southwest rec is the only real good gym on campus. Im all for this as long as it isnt majorly inconveniencing normal operations which im sure it will anyway.

It’s about time. Strength training at the rec past 4pm is unbearable.
