UFO's-What do you believe?

1) do you believe in UFO’s, if so what do you think they are?

2) Is there a government coverup?

3) Have you ever had any UFO experiences?

4) If someday aliens made contact with us, do you think there would be a collapse of governments and religions?

Ours or theirs?

I firmly believe in UFOs in the sense of there are objects occasionally seen in the sky that cannot be readily identified. But it’s a huge unfounded leap, to the point of absurdity, to conclude that because we don’t know what something is that it must be from another planet.

Think about it. Our explorations have shown that there are no other habitable planets in our solar system. Thus any “aliens” will need to come from another star system. The challenges in both time and technology required to fly from one star system to another are so enormous as to push actual visits from such aliens into the realm of fiction.

So when we see a mysterious object in the sky it’s much more sensible to postulate that it is likely a test flight of a secret new Air Force aircraft, or a strange weather phenomenon, or a regular old airplane viewed from an odd vantage point, or any one of a dozen other explanations that are FAR more plausible than alien visitors.

1 - no (in the context of it being an alien ship as opposed to just something ‘unidentified’) - I don’t think they’re hovering around, mostly at night, mostly in lonely desert areas. If an alien ship came here it seems that we’d have real contact by now. There’s really no point in an alien ship, by definition technologically far more advanced than we are, in coming here if not to make contact since observation and data acquisition can be done remotely. I don’t understand why people don’t get that concept.
I think people who ‘want’ to believe in UFOs will readily identify things they see that they don’t understand as an alien ship when it’s typically a natural event or secret military vehicle. What if someone saw a B2 stealth bomber flying around 30 years ago or some of the current UAVs flying around 15 years ago? Some people would conclude it must be a secret military vehicle, some would conclude they just don’t know what it is and leave it at that, yet some will conclude it must be an alien ship since in their own ignorance they don’t know what else it could be.

2 - no - There’s not much the government can keep secret for long - certainly not over the course of decades and through many different leadership changes.

3 - no - and I’ve driven around a lot…in deserts…at night.

4 - yes - although it’d likely cause more unification of earth’s people.

You would be surprised at how many people do believe in UFO’s. I once worked with a brilliant scientist who saw a UFO while he was a pilot in the Korean War. He was the most rationally scientific person you could ever meet, and he was absolutely convinced of what he saw. He went on to be a member of a local group of scientists and engineers who investigate UFO reports called in to local law enforcement. I think it’s cool that these people are doing this, and if proof of alien life is ever discovered, I want them to be the ones that find it.

If you’ve ever listened to the radio overnight, you have probably heard Coast-to-Coast. Hate suffering from insomnia, but love listening to that show. The manner in which UFO’s are discussed (abductions, sightings, infiltrations. etc.) is very rational - everyone sounds completely coherent and logical. Fascinating radio! (Actually, the Bigfoot segments are our favs)

I’m surprised the list doesn’t ask how many of us have been abducted by aliens, and then returned after having various probes inserted.

I’m convinced too. I have no reason whatsoever to doubt that he saw a peculiar flying object. But there is also no reason at all to suppose that what he saw originated anywhere but right here on earth.

This was the theme on Castle this week - very X-Files oriented. Castle was totally open-minded about the potential of UFO’s and abduction; Becket was totally skeptical - but it all turned out to have a logical (albeit secret government agency) explanation. Fun episode.

disagree…what if their civilization started hundreds of years before us…how about thousands? Don’t you think their technology would be way beyond our comprehension?

To put it in context, we have gone from horse and buggy transportation to space travel in about a hundred years. Where do you think we will be at 500 years from now, a thousand, 10,000?

I believe people do see very mysterious objects sometimes, which cannot be easily explained. My mind is open to their possibly being alien in some way, but I really don’t know.

I don’t know for sure about a coverup, but it seems that far more people make fun of the idea than take it seriously, for whatever reason. There are also quite a number of people in the world like the man UCLA Band Mom mentioned.

No, I’ve never had a UFO experience. It would be interesting if somebody would post here who did.

Who knows what would happen? I’ve always been fascinated by Arthur C. Clarke’s book “Childhood’s End,” which strikes me as oddly plausible somehow.

If aliens did come here, they might behave in some way that makes absolutely no sense to us. So I’m prepared to consider any possibility, including the idea that they are playing practical jokes on us.

I believe that there is other life in the universe. It’s hard to believe that out of the great expanse of the universe we’re the only sometimes-intelligent life.

But the chances that they come upon us or us upon them seem small. I’d settle for their cable TV.

And that’s exactly why they scientifically investigate all the sightings. That’s also why I am half hoping that some day they really do find proof of an alien space ship. ;)

borghugh, did you happen to read the book UFOs: Generals, Pilots and Government Officials Go On the Record by independent journalist Leslie Kean? I did.
