Hello!
I’m new to this site so forgive me if I’m in the wrong forum.
I’m a rising senior at a public, inner-city high school in Denver, CO. I’ve had a lot of problems in high school such as a severe concussion and other health issues that have caused me to miss classes, therefore affecting my grades. I know I’ll be able to explain my situation to colleges but the bottom line is that my GPA simply isn’t what it needs to be for most of the schools I’m interested in.
Currently, I have a 3.4 unweighted GPA, around a 3.8-3.9 weighted. I don’t think it will have changed by the time I apply. My first ACT I scored a 28 composite, with a 36 in English. I’ve been working really hard on improving math and sciences and think I can (hopefully) get above a 30 next time I take it! I’m a white female and I don’t play sports, although I swam freshman year. I’m heavily involved in my school’s choral department and have won awards for it, as well as winning singing competitions in the state/region. I do a lot of community service and am the vice-president of my school’s A Capella Club. I also am an active member of the Colorado Youth Ceasefire and Gender Equality clubs at my school.
I am looking to apply to University of Gerogia, University of Alabama, University of Mississippi, Indiana University and University of Colorado Boulder. My parents both went to UGA but I know that doesn’t factor into admissions. UGA is my top choice by far, but I keep reading about students who had perfect GPA’s and great ECs/test scores and didn’t get in! I’m extremely nervous, to say the least. I’m planning on majoring in Political Science or Philosophy and maybe minoring in music.
I want to know what the people on this website think my chances might be for each school, but also, if accepted to all four, what anyone’s personal experiences have been with each. I know a lot about UGA (then again, it was UGA in the 80’s) and I know a little about CU, but not nearly as much as I’d like to about any of them.
Thanks!!!
XO
I predict that you get into Alabama, Ole Miss, Indiana. UC-Boulder is a match, I would say. UGA may be a reach, but you’ll definitely be competitive.
I got into Alabama out of high school with almost identical stats.
Where else did you get in? @temoc22
You’re in at Bama and Ole Miss with ease. Bama is growing by leaps and bounds and is already huge, and Ole Miss is smaller than Bama, more rural, and has quite the reputation as a party school, of course Bama is no slouch there either. Bama has an active Greek presence and it isn’t the easiest to avoid is you aren’t looking for that, but it can be done in such a huge university. The campus is also pretty urban. You’ll qualify for a 4k scholarship at Bama and 2.5k + 4k towards “non resident fees” at Ole Miss. Georgia is a reach, especially for an OOS student, but the legacy might help. Georgia’s campus is also fairly urban, similar to Bama in the fact that it also has green space, although unlike Bama, it’s all one big hill. Georgia is also bigger than Ole Miss, but it doesn’t feel quite as big as Bama. Indiana (outside of the Indianapolis Campus) and UC Boulder I am not as familiar with but I can try and help you with the other three if you have any more questions about them. Hope this helped!
Thank you for taking the time to help me out @Hertzog !
So embarrassed that I spelled Georgia as “Gerogia” in my original post
If I can get my GPA up to a 3.5 will that make any difference? I’m taking a few online courses this summer and have a schedule full of AP classes in subjects that actually interest me set for senior year (UGA adds .5 to all AP class when constructing the GPA that they actually consider during admissions). I think if I get all A’s I can get my GPA up to at least a 3.5.
Sorry I keep commenting but I keep thinking of new things! I just calculated it and since UGA only takes core classes (English, math, science, social studies and foreign language) into consideration, with .5 added for each AP, assuming I get all A’s and one B first semester of senior year I’ll have a 3.8 by Georgia’s standards.
Does anyone know if they take into account first semester senior year? Because if not, I will be finishing with a 3.4
Your GPA improvement will help.
As for me, to answer your question, I got into Texas Tech, Alabama, Baylor, UT-Dallas, and SMU. I was rejected by UT-Austin, UW-Seattle, and U of Michigan.
Also, as far as I know, your first semester of senior year doesn’t matter that much. Just make a good grade so that wherever you get in doesnt rescind your admission.
If you want to go to UGA, get A’s on those online classes, work and volunteer this summer, and spend extra time on the essays for that school. I think you’re likely to get into the other schools that you applied to.
