I’ve been accepted to the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology program in UGA Honors College and the Neuroscience major in UAB Honors. As a Georgia resident, I’m leaning more towards UGA. However, I’ve heard that UAB offers more opportunities for research, volunteering, and clinical hours, which are important for medical school applications. On the other hand, I’ve also heard that at UGA has great pre-med advising and opportunities, but it might be harder to secure these research/clinical/volunteer opportunities due to the competition. Do you have any advice or suggestions? Thanks!
I think you’ll find at any school, you can do research. You simply need to ask. But you’re not any student - you’re in UGA Honors - which is tops. Yes, UAB is a leading medical center.
Do you want urban or traditional.
My suggestion visit both - but I imagine if there’s 100 kids in your same position (including cost - UAB will be dirt cheap but I assume you have free tuition) - 90+ will go UGA.
But if it’s not right for you (it’s a much bigger school and not just population - and more suburban), then it’s not right for you. My daughter got in to UGA + Honors but it was one of the first off the list when she decided the campus was just too big.
That might be the only reason to say no - but rep wise these two schools aren’t in the same league - but for med school, that likely doesn’t matter.

Thanks for replying! Btw I love UGA campus. Also, from what I researched about colleges, UGA has a better reputation than UAB. Any thoughts?
Forget about reputation between these two colleges. It really doesn’t matter.
You can take the required courses for medical school applicants at either college.
You need to figure out where you want to spend the next four years, and will be happy. Happy students do better than unhappy ones. Doing well in college is important for medical school applicants.

A new med school is opening at the UGA-Athens campus for late summer/fall 2026.
The UGA med school has already achieved candidate status with LCME. All that’s left is a site visit scheduled for later this summer. This means everything is in place for the med school open at or before its expected 2026 date.
So access to clinical experiences and other opportunities (including access to research) may be quite different a year from now than it is now.
