UGA vs. Your Dream School (in-state perspectives plz)

right now i am stuck between UGA and UC Berkeley. i really want to go to Berkeley because i love the environment and i know i will academically thrive there – there’s so much to offer. however, my parents are really pressing me to go to UGA just because they feel that i’ll get a higher gpa and go to a med school (a possibility, but not my plan as of yet). for me, i want to use my undergraduate years to look into other things than the whole medical thing that they keep shoving down my throat.

so, anyone else stuck in the same situation? i honestly wish my parents were more asian and push me to work to the best of my abilities. right now it just seems like they’re purposely trying to dumb me down (not to say that UGA is a bad school, it’s just that they keep giving it that connotation as part of their argument for me to go).

MEEE! I am sooo stuck between NYU and UGA. I want to go to NYU for theater, but I’m not sure if it’s worth the money and the time. On the other hand, I applied to UGA as a safety and I haven’t done any research regarding their academic standing.

Congrats on getting into UCB!! I was rejected from UCLA and USC (boo). California hates me apparently. I’m also thinking about going to medical school after my undergraduate. My mom and I had a similiar argument, but it was that she wanted me to go to a school with a med school attached to it (Mercer) because she felt I’d have a better chance of getting into that med school than if I went some place that didn’t have a med school.

Well, forunetly we talked to my ENT doc about it. He’s a UGA grad and went on to the Medical College of Georgia. He’s on some admissions board (I’m not really sure if it’s the Medical College, but I could assume it is), and he says that they aren’t allowed to look at what school you’re coming from. It doesn’t matter how prestigious your school is, they’ll look at your MCAT and GPA first and foremost. If those aren’t good enough, it doesn’t matter where you went to school. A 4.0 here will probably move to the next step over a 3.7 at UCB or the like. He told me to go to an easier school and get the higher GPA than go to a harder school and risk getting a lower GPA.

I mean, it’s all up to you whether you want the prestige of going to UCB. But like I said, my doctor told me they don’t look where you went to school. It’s your GPA and MCAT scores that count (for the initial part…then it’s your interview).

^ thanks mackie45 and jenmarie. it makes feel better that i’m not the only one stuck in this mess :P.

jenmarie - thanks! ucla rejected me too and i had my payback when they lost to florida the other night :D. the thing is, i don’t know what i want yet. medical school is just a possibility, though it’s probably not one of my top routes. i’m also interested in business, in which case Berkeley > UGA by a landslide. thus, i really want to use my undergrad years to find out what it is that i would like to do the rest of my life while staying in a college environment suited for me. BLAH making this decision sucks :(

Go to UGA. We can start an “anywhere but here” club.

Think of it like this- is the price of going to an expensive school like NYU or UCB worth it compared to the education you’ll get at UGA? Also, UGA is a pretty darn good school in a lot of areas, especially if you want a challenge. I know plenty of very smart premeds at UGA who have a difficult time with the pre-med classes. The Terry College for Business is also no slouch and in certain departments it’s quite good on a national level as well.

If you dedicate yourself to getting the best education possible by doing research on your department, choosing the best professors, seeking out research opportunities, etc., you will get a quality education. It might not be as easy to do and you don’t get the “guarantee” of a “prestigious” diploma, but a UGA degree certainly can be respected in the Southeast.

I think a lot of it just depends on how you approach your time at college- if you want to get an good education, no matter where you go you can find it. You can also find your social niche if you’re willing to get out and find people with common interests. There are so many groups of different kinds on campus that everyone who wants can find his/her place.

Mackie

No offense, but I would not consider UGA as a safety school for someone with a 1120 SAT. In fact, that’s below the lower 25% here by a ways. You should consider yourself fortunate to have been admitted. Obviously you had some excellent qualities to compensate, but I think you are underestimating UGA. Of course, if I had been admitted to NYU, I would have gone, but UGA is a solid choice

ooh. Much offense was taken. Um, UGA is not the best school in the southeast. Alot of people might like to think that but with my EC’s, i can easily say that UGA was one of my safeties, Regardless of my SAT’s.

Mackie,

I do hope that wherever you end up, you will learn to appreciate humility,
learn tact and mature. Personally, after reading through your posts, I think NYU seems to fit your personality much more.

Excuse me? What are you talking about? I never brag about anything, not even close. If you are refering to the post above, I was completely justified. I would suggest that you read those posts more thoroughly. There is nothing wrong with saying that a school was a safety. After all, I didn’t coin the phrase. And i didn’t insult anyone either, so I really don’t appreciate you insulting me. That’s the end of that. Enjoy your day… the thread’s all yours.

I wanted to take the moment for apologizing for anything I may have said. I try to be as objective as possible. Yes, SAT is not everything. I very much believe that it is over emphasized. However, when one is quite a bit below the lower 25%, it is hard for ECs to make up for it. This is true especially at large public schools. Again, I apologize, but wanted to make things clear for other prospective students.

anyone else? :)

If I hadn’t gotten pretty much a full scholarship to Michigan, I’d be going to UGA. I really don’t think any public school is worth $30,000 + more per year than UGA Honors. If you’ve gotten into Honors, you should definitely go to UGA and sit in on an Honors class. I talked to some people there who were in the same situation as you but chose UGA and have never regretted it. The Honors program is really good- a lot tougher to get in to than the honors programs at comparable schools. Unless you have a good scholarship offer from Berkeley/you really dislike UGA for some reason, I would suggest saving the money for graduate school. However, if you aren’t in honors at UGA, I would suggest going to Berkeley.

Ok, so D got nice scholarship from UNC but nothing from homestate except HOPE scholarship (UGA)…she has not heard from UGA Honors, but we are ticked off at UGA for not offering anything…she was national merit finalist, and had full ride offers at 13 schools, but has narrowed her interest to these two. I don’t want to tell d that UGA did not give her anything as I don’t want her to not like it for that reason…or is that the rt thing to do…thoughts? should she take the money and go to UNC one of the TOP public universities or stay closer…uga. I just don’t know if she will consider UGA if no honors & no money.

ATLMom, if your D would definitely go to UGA if she gets into the Honors program, but is prepared to go to UNC if she doesn’t, she has nothing to lose by contacting the UGA Admissions Office, advising them of all the full ride offers and the UNC scholarship and then stating that, despite all those other offers, she would go to UGA if she got into the Honors program (only if this is the truth, of course). This is exactly the type of kid UGA is trying to attract in its honors program. Good luck!
