Hey guys. I was wondering if one bad essay score (say Q1 or below) will kill my chances of getting into the top 25%. I’ve been pretty much getting either 0-1 wrong on the tests so far. Thanks.

How do you know it’s that bad? The stats for the essay haven’t even come out yet.

Well, my GSI said the average was about 17 and I scored a point below. I’m guessing its at least Q1 if not lower.

Does this mean Q3 is 18? Q3 means its A- or above, right?

you’re fine. You can still get A easily :)

@demoz: I think thats how it’ll look

ah i totally messed up the mod2 test…thank god for P/NP

If all of your tests/papers are above Q3 and you did well in participation, does it mean that you will get some kind of A in the class? Or, does what u get on the exams and papers mean nothing and it is still curved in the end, as in the lower As get knocked down to B+?

If you get Q2 or above on everything, you will get some sort of A in the class :)

Q2? isn’t that the median?

Wait how do you guys know your scores?
Just because your GSI gave you an 18 doesn’t mean you really got an 18, right? Because our essay scores are scaled in the end, across all the sections.
For example, I think my GSI said he gave mostly 16s, couple 17s, few 18s. That would make 18 the new A, etc.

Just wait until Friday or whenever they post the stats of the whole class :)

i want more free muffins

yeah, that’s the median.
You have to think, not everyone scores Q3 all the time. And top 25% gets As. as long as you score consistently above Q2, you’ll be fine.

Experience.

Are the papers curved relative to your section or to the stats he posted up on the website? How does the “scaling and smoothing” across sections work?

the papers are curved to your section. Scaling and smooting across section works based on you GSI’s average and the preset curve.
