UGBA 101A: Fitch vs. Marschak

For those who have taken UGBA 101A, which professor would you recommend? I’ve heard that Fitch is an engaging professor, but his lectures are different than MyEconLab & exams. Marschak seems easy since he has the open notes/book tests, but I’ve heard that his lectures are hard to understand. Also, how does the Haas curve work? I’m still a bit confused on it and was wondering if it is followed (i.e., does this mean Marschak gives less A’s now?) ?

there’s no curve. just a mean gpa all profs need to hit: 3.4 (fair enough)
if a professor wants to give out more A’s, that just means s/he needs to also give out more C’s. usually haas community would die if they tried getting jobs with C’s on their transcript, so the natural steady state for grades is some A’s and more B’s and few C’s.

anyway, Fitch is indeed an engaging prof. he was even nominated for the earl cheit teaching award this year by his students.

if you want to learn micro econ, go for Fitch.

if you want an easier experience but not really learn, go to Marschak. 2/3 of the class doesn’t even go to lecture.

that said. if you remember ugba 10, easier class =/= easier A, since it will be a much tighter distribution and every point will count…

UGBA 101A is a core class, so the mean GPA is actually 3.2

Take Fitch if you want to be entertained and learn something, take Marshak if you’re good with independent learning

^3.2 for core is correct, please excuse my mistaken information

For Marschak, is discussion mandatory? As in do they take attendance and I’ll be in trouble/lose points if I can’t attend?

Nope, discussion isn’t mandatory for 101A. :)

Discussion/recitation is mandatory for 103, 104, 105, 106, and 107
