UIC-GPPA.

Yea, I had my honors college interview at the end of February and was accepted a week later. I’m honestly content with just being in the college, so not getting into GPPA Med is really nothing more than disappointment…

Has anyone heard about merit scholarships yet?

A couple of my students have gotten some scholarship notifications but they are URM. Nothing for mu son with a cost of over 32K. For my son it’s actually cheaper to go to a different out of state public and/or private school - frustrating!

I have my interview soon for Honors College. For anyone who has already done it, what is the interview like? What questions do they ask? And what are the impromptu essay questions like?

Midhelper…URM? I agree about the 32K…it will be less expensive to go to our private school choices since they gave very generous merit scholarships! That being said…GPPA is a wonderful opportunity!

URM - minority. @cytomom did you already get the GPPA interview?

Midhelper…yes, in Feb…just waiting to hear back!

Does anyone know if all the honors college scholarships have already been awarded?

@mcat9442 financial aid is out but no word on scholarships unless you are URM.

Are all of the GPPA Med interviews over already?

KiterPatel…I was told that last Thursday was the last of the interviews.

I know this may be off topic in regards to admissions, but what do you guys think of the GPPA Medicine program altogether? I’ve heard of all the benefits of guaranteed admission and things like that, but I haven’t got to talk to actual GPPA med students. I’m considering this program along with normal undergrad at UChicago and Northwestern. If anyone has any thoughts or reviews of the program, they would be much appreciated.

I would not recommend U Chicago for premed. The school itself only accepts 3% of their own UG students into their medical school. The grading is so harsh it would be very difficult to get a good GPA there compared to UIC for example. The same may be true of Northwestern but I am not sure of that. UIC UG is not as exciting as Northwestern or U Chicago. You can apply out of the med program to other Med programs though. UIC med school is the largest in the country.

Thank you for the input. The only thing that concerns me is that it may be harder to gain acceptance into other medical schools as they may not pay as much weight to someone who went to UIC UG rather than Northwestern or UChicago UG.

No med schools will not do that. They will only look at your gpa and ec’s not the ug institutions

I’ve been accepted to UChicago and am waiting for the UIC GPPA program notifcation, but if I do get accepted to UIC GPPA, I still feel like I want to go to UChicago! I really think that the educational experience at UChicago is too hard to pass up!, but that’s just my personal take :)

Are they going to send out rejection letters for those who didn’t get in? If so, does anyone know when?

I know a couple of UIC GPPA med students and they are very happy with the program. UIC is a very different experience from UChicago so it’s about fit as far as the college experience. UIC GPPA students have been highly successful at being accepted into other medical schools…just pull up profiles from a medical school you might be interested in. I believe one strength of the GPPA program at this time is the assurance of a med school placement in the changing landscape of the MCAT exam…no one knows how that will shake out and how the new scores will be interpreted by each medical school-new benchmarks need to be established. That being said, there is no doubt that if you are successful at UChicago you will be successful with a medical school acceptance. I was given a piece of advice by several physicians and that was to take 24 hours to feel really good about my acceptance to schools like UChicago and then get over it, save the $$ and go to GPPA and put the $$ towards medical school. No one cares where you went to undergrad school once you become a physician.

Thanks everyone for the input. I am pretty sure I will attend the GPPA program if accepted.

I emailed the GPPA coordinator and all decisions will be released on April 1 on the apply.uic. portal. It will say “Admit” if accepted. Letters and emails will follow shortly after.

@cytomom I totally agree with saving the money. I am also curious as to how the MCAT #'s will be received by colleges. Won’t students with previous MCAT scores and new MCAT scores possibly be applying together at the same time? How will that all pan out I wonder…scary.
