UIUC admission

I am applying for UIUC for next Fall. I heard that it is hard to get into especially for its College of Engineering. My TOEFL Score is only 230 computer-based and my SAT I Score is not that high. I was just wondering how if I applied for colleges other than Engineering then later changed my major for an engineering major I wanted to be in (Electrical Engineering). Or maybe applying for an engineering major that is not competitive enough then transferring within UIUC’s College of Engineering. Would you consider it to be a “higher” chance of being admitted? Is there anyone out there has experienced such changing major at UIUC? Was the process hard or complicated?

Yeah, you could always transfer later, you just have to maintain a required GPA like 2.5-2.7 or so. It’s not that hard.

You should review this page on UIUC’s site:

http://www.oar.uiuc.edu/prospective/ugrad/int_geninfo.html</a></p>

As you will see your Toefl is below the minimum (253 computer-based) that is required to even be considered for admission to the the engineering school but higher than needed to be considered for admission to other colleges at the university (213).

As to transfer into engineering once you are in at another college in the university, go here for information:

http://www.engr.uiuc.edu/Advising/transferguidelines.html</a></p>

As you will see to be approved for transfer into electrical engineering, you need a 2.9 or higher GPA in the college courses taken before transfer; moreover that is the GPA this year, it could rise (or, more unlikely, fall) by the time you actually attempt to transfer. You should also be aware that the engineering school, for transfers into it, will give “priority to Illinois residents.” Nevertheless, if you take all the needed courses to transfer, have the minimum “approved” GPA as shown on that page (or any change that is made before you transfer), and attempt the transfer in junior rather than sophomore, you should have little problem; a sophomore year transfer is more difficult.
