UIUC Class OF 2022 Admissions Thread

Admitted to CoE - Aerospace Engineering!
I know CoE is “significantly harder” to get into than gen college, anyone know how much so?
Anyone know anything specific about competitiveness of aerospace? Bc honestly my app wasn’t that spectacular.
White female, in-state
Class Rank 1/102, 32 ACT, essay was done in about 10 mins…

Accepted to Chemical engineering-LAS
Indian student
10th std-10/10 cgpa
12th std-95.8%(currently on a gap year)
I had pretty good ECs and my essay was on how I could improve my country’s electricity problems.
Could anyone tell when is the last day for accepting the decision?

Hi everyone,
I got Waitlisted for Computer Science

@Rajamani it’s may 1st

Updating for my D
Accepted to Bio chem in Arts and science (1st major engineering undeclared). Her 2nd choice essay was more informative and direct that could be one reason. Deferred EA.
ACT - 34(superscore35)
Subject SAT - M2/P/C - 800/800/790
Toefl - 118
10th CBSE - 10CGPA
11th - 88.9%(CBSE)
Decent ECs, Good essays.

Many kids look at UIUC as a safe option, guess it is getting competitive nowadays.

Rejected to CoE : /
33 ACT
3.3 unweighted/ 4.0 weighted
Poor EC’s though

Waitlisted wow…
Major: Computer Science (First and only choice)
SAT: 1440 (740 M and 700 Eng)
SAT II: 800 Math and 730 Physics
Full IB Diploma Student: HL Physics and Math
EC’s: Pretty good variety of Mathematics, electronics, and programming. Forgot to mention I became the VP of Astronomy Club and founded a COmputer Science club at my school. (I got deferred and these two happened only last month, I should’ve probably sent an email but thought it was too late).
Self-taught HTML, CSS, Java, and Swift.
Had a feeling I was going to get waitlisted but surprised I was right…
Congrats to everyone who got in and good luck to everyone who didn’t.
@boka Yea Purdue is my first and only acceptance so far (other universities don’t respond until late March/early April) but most of the other universities I applied to are competitive too so might end up at Purdue as well

For admitted students, can we accept the admission offer and pay $150 non refundable fee but change our minds later? Because we need to accept the offer before registering for dorm.

Decision: Denied
1st choice Major: Computer Science

SAT: 1460 (790 Math and 670 English)
IB: 38/42
Resume: Startup, Internship, DJ, etc.
LOR: Good, not amazing
Essay: Not great

Maybe cuz of my essays I did not get in :frowning:
Was really expecting a yes from U of I; has been on the top of my list.

Anyways, I am submitting the appeal form. Hope it makes a difference! :))

Posting info for my son:

@Merapi42A I didn’t think there was any benefit to getting your housing contract in early at UIUC.

@tonypa oh I see, everyone will not have difficulty finding dorms?

Accepted into Mechanical Engineering
OOS
GPA: 4.0 UW, 4.5 W
ACT: 31 Composite | 34 English, 29 Math, 34 Reading, 26 Science
Product Development Engineer Intern at Herman Miller, Machine Learning Service Project, misc. leadership roles as president and captain including Science Club and Varsity Soccer.

I really thought my ACT math and science were really going to hurt me but I think my GPA and persistent interest in engineering (especially my internship and service project) were the key factors in my acceptance. Best of luck to everyone else!

@cmd7131 - thank you. It’s hard not to feel like his gender played a role, as we were specifically told by a dean in the COE that they were looking for and would give preference to women/URM/rural (none of which he is). He also had honors/DE/CS-related stuff/great essay, etc (and was accepted to Purdue and UMN among others-didn’t apply to GT). I don’t begrudge anyone in IL who was accepted (and as a side note, I am in favor of affirmative action/preferencing women in fields where they’ve been under-represented, etc, even if it might not be favorable for my son at the moment). However, it’s disappointing to know that COE recruits so heavily and accepts so many OOS and foreign nationals (UIUC is #1 of all universities based on F-1 visas). I feel like that’s not its mission as a state school. I think that so many of IL’s best-and-brightest end up going elsewhere-if not for lack of admittance, then for costs-that it isn’t good for our state. However, my son wasn’t in love with UIUC or completely set on it (no one could deny the amazing CS program, but he wasn’t 100% sure about fit), so I am sure he’ll be fine wherever he ends up, but it just seems a bit crazy. @syzygy53 was your son OOS?

Denied: BioEngineering (Will be meeting with admissions about it)
Accepted: Latino/a Studies

GPA: 4.6818, Rank: 5
ACT: 25 (STEM: 29)
Activities: Professional Muralist, Latin Dance Instructor, Internship, Science Fair 9-11th grade (Gold in regional, city, state; alternate for international) Recruited by the Illinois Institute of Technology sophomore year for conducting research on my project for a year on campus.

Ethnicity: Latino
Gender: Male

I had a feeling that I wouldn’t be admitted to my first choice because of my test scores, even though I had stellar extracurriculars to back it up. I hoped that my essay was good because I spent much time focusing on my research and how I feel like I NEED to continue doing engineering research in college because I love it so much. I am currently researching pathways in treating fibroids in women without risking their fertility status. I don’t mind the second choice, I chose it because I was planning on a dual-major. Latino/a studies is important because I have much interest in education policy within latino dominant schools in Chicago. I was a bilingual student there and I felt like the system can definitely be changed to better support us.

Yes, my son is OOS.

I would also like to add (the obvious): Posting and comparing academic credentials is a fun-satisfying-interesting-feel_good endeavor, but we have all learned that the admissions process is much more complex than raw scores and amazing ECs. Universities and colleges of every ilk are trying to create a whole, vibrant, interesting and successful incoming class. This is our first child going to college and we have learned a lot. Especially from my son, who is sanguine and laid back about the whole process. He is neither too excited about his acceptances nor disappointed (at all) in denials. He knows he’ll do well wherever he goes.
