UIUC Discovery Course & Scheduling

What is the maximum number of Discovery Courses can a freshman take? They say students SHOULD only take 1. But is it possible to take more?

Are Gen Ed requirements the classes that are supposed to be easy&interesting so that they balance out the difficult major requirements?

How difficult is Math 124&125 compared to Math 231?

In reverse order of questions:

Math 124 and 125 are not overly difficult and do not use calculus but can still be difficult for many not that good in math. 231 is a calculus course and can be a bear for those who are not very good in math or don’t have the needed math proficiency to be able to take calculus.

Gen Ed requirements are courses designed to give you a broad based education. The courses range from those that are not very difficult to you will be struggling constantly and working your tail off. Many look for some easier gen ed courses to compliment their major courses and meet the requirements but you definitely should not assume they will all be easier than your major courses.

You should not be spending all your life in freshman year taking discovery courses. One is fine, two maybe but you have to plan things to assure that you are taking courses that are actually going to count towards some requirement such as a particular gen ed requirement because if you waste freshman year taking a bunch of courses that will count only as “electives” and not towards any requirements, you will find yourself going to college for at least five years. Moreover, the discovery courses have limited enrollment, under 20, making it highly unlikely you can even get into more than one or two.
