UIUC (Information Science) vs University of Minnesota Twin City (CS/DS)

My son admitted to Information science,UIUC for in states. However After review the curriculum, which is not tech enough, and there is no chance to transfer to CS; Additionally, he was admitted into the twin college of Engineering, can pick CS , DS double majors. I prefer to twin since it is much vigorous program although more tuition. Please let me know what you think.

[University of Minnesota twinncity]

Unless there is some other barrier like cost, the obvious choice is to attend the school where the student can study the desired major.

This would be a secondary admission program, is that correct? I haven’t looked at the stats on placement into CS, does it look favorable for getting the major(s) he wants?

In University of Minnesota’s College of Science and Engineering, students in that division who earn a 3.2 GPA in technical courses are guaranteed admission to their major of choice. Otherwise, it is competitive admission.

University of Minnesota because he can major in his preferred area of study.

Minnesota is the better choice, as others have said. But curious - why did he apply to UIUC to a major he’s not interested in?

Like mentioned above 3.2 GPA guarantees admission to major, but statistics from previous semesters show only 70% had this GPA for CS and only 50% had this for DS. Some of the pre-reqs can be met with AP CALC and AP CS A scores if available.

He didn’t realize the info science is not in Engineering colleges, thought it is IT

First , second is Autuary science

Plus we are Illinois residents

He completed AP calculus 3 already with strong math

The third offer is pre-major in University of Washington Seattle; since CS is not filled. What is pre- major in Liberty Art college?

The required courses are below. They are slightly different for CS and DS(needs statistics)

Do you mean that he was admitted to pre-sciences at UW?

Yes, pre major

Ok, if he wants CS, I would cross UW off the list.

I suggest him for applied math. Stat minor in CS? Doable? Or computation finance and risk management in Amath

At UW, if you are not a CS major, the access to CS courses is limited. Here is some information: Non-Major Registration | Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering

I think it is better to choose another school where he can pursue the major of his choice. UMN is a good school!

I checked UMN , pretty good curriculum even AI for undergrad, nice CSE although overall rank is lower than UIUC and UW
