UIUC Placement Exams

Hello! I was accepted to UIUC for the CS major in the CoE, and I was wondering about placement exams. I know that all AP credits are accepted by UIUC (I got a 5 in Calc BC last year, so I can place out of Calc I and II).

However, this year I’ve taken multi-variable calculus (Calc III) and am currently taking linear algebra this semester. I’ve done pretty well in each so far (B+ last semester for Calc III, and am projected a B for linear algebra) so I was wondering: how I would go about taking the placement exams or requesting them (since I’m assuming not many students would be attempting to place out of these math courses)? Or would you recommend that I re-take the courses in college regardless of whether I place out of them?

I would like to meet as many core requirements of my major ASAP so that I can begin taking higher-level electives and courses, and I wouldn’t want to re-take a class that I already feel I have a decent enough understanding in. But if there is a lack of understanding in some areas, I definitely want to address that in my first year at UIUC so that it doesn’t hamper me in the future.

You can take proficiency exams around the first week of classes to get credit. If you feel you understand the material, just take the prof exams and save yourself some time.

I’d strongly recommend getting good at linear algebra. It’s so important in your later classes. Calc 3 not so much unless you go into lower level systems.
