Hi everyone! As May 1 is coming closer and closer, I need help deciding what college I should attend. I have applied to all these colleges with different majors, depending on what each school offers. However, I am planning to be a pre-med student, regardless of where I end up.
At UIUC, I applied as an undecided engineering student, and am considering doing biomedical engineering if I go there. At ND, I applied as a Neuroscience and Behavior major, and at UW-Madison I applied as a biochem major.
How do these colleges’ pre-med programs stack up? and is my major likely to have a large impact on whether or not I get accepted for med school?
Thanks in advance!!
Pre-med “programs” don’t exist at any of these schools. The necessary pre-reqs will be offered at each school. (Indeed offered at nearly every 4 year college and university in the US and Canada.) But preparation [everywhere] for med school and the MCAT is up to you.
No school is going to hold your hand and walk through class selection, tell you where to apply for med school or help you find ECs or research positions. That’s your job.
Pick the college that offers the best combination of fit, affordability and opportunities,

The choice of major has no effect on your ability to get accepted into med school. You will not get brownie points for having a "hard’ major nor for being an engineering major.
Pick the major you enjoy. Happier student = better grades (And there’s empirical evidence to back this up.)
What are your costs, respectively? What can your family afford? And by “applied”, do you really mean accepted to the programs you applied for? It is past April 1; all decisions should have arrived, save for waitlists, etc.
@anhydrite I have been accepted at these colleges for their respective programs, but I haven’t yet accepted my offer. Sorry if my language wasn’t clear. And as far as financial aid goes, UIUC costs the least since we are in-state, but the tuition for UW-Madison is just as affordable as that of UIUC. Notre Dame is a little expensive in comparison to UIUC and Madison, but the cost is still managable without huge student loans.
I don’t think there are official pre-med programs at all three; that said, the biological sciences, and I believe the medical school research, is strongest at Wisconsin. If you perform well at these schools, each should provide a solid chance at med school, as they are all well-respected in academia. Also, medical school admissions aren’t prestige-oriented re: undergrad in the way that, say, law or finance is. If you were to focus on bio-medical engineering, then I’d suggest UIUC, though that particular engineering focus (really, most anything to do with bio-sciences) will also be strong at Wisconsin.
How do you get into med school? Does anyone ever ask an MD where they went to undergrad? You need some prerequisite courses, a very high GPA and great MCAT scores. Since med school will cost boat loads of money and all 3 of these colleges meet your other needs, go where the cost is lower. If you think you might not end up going to med school and your family can afford ND, it would be the best undergraduate degree in terms of prestige and alumni network
