UIUC vs UCSD vs U Toronto for applied math

Hi, everyone!
I am an incoming freshman that got offers from above three schools. Just wondering which of them has a better applied math major. Also I plan to double major in Computer science/Computer engineering or graduate a year earlier. Can someone please give an analysis based on my situation?(I am an international student, current career plan is to do financial math) Really appreciate your efforts of reading it and helping me out!

I can answer your question with regards to U of T. The applied math specialist would be top notch. You can’t double major in computer science as there is no applied math major to combine it with and computer engineering is another faculty altogether, so no engineering for you. You could major in math and computer science or take a computer science minor however. U of T has done away with its 3 year degrees. You may be able to do courses in the summer with would allow you to graduate before your 4 years are up though. U of T will be about half the price of the other two universities.

Toronto is an extremely diverse city, definitely more so than the locations of the other two universities, and you should have no trouble finding other students from your home country or city. The St. George campus (I’m assuming that’s where you got in? ) is surrounded by many ethnic restaurants and grocery stores. I would expect that any homesickness would be less there.

Do you have family in any of the locations?

I don’t have family in any of the locations … The problem of U of T is that I have few friends went there, it seems like all they do is party all day. I am also curious about U of T’s relatively low entrance bar…(My friend who has really bad grades even got in) can you give me some insight about these? Really appreciate your answers.

U of T’s entrance bar can seem low relative to US universities of similar quality. You can’t get in with “bad” grades. Canadian students have to be in at least the top 30-40% of their school. However … U of T will weed out those students who don’t study and who party all the time. The average for a course is around a 2.3 to 2.7 GPA. Students who have a cumulative GPA less than 1.5 will be put on academic probation. If they get on probation and then don’t get at least a 1.7 the next year, they get suspended for a year. If it happens again, they’re suspended for 3 years - a third time and they’re kicked out. Your friends might party all day, but they won’t graduate unless they perform decently in school.
