UK 2020- class of 2023/24

I think @llamamama1714 's son will be OK without a language AP for most places as he will also have some Russian from the summer course.

World History is good for an AP, as language courses often include history and cultural aspects of the countries whose language is studied; maths (calc) can be usefu l for linguistics; and Lit obviously is good. But check each uni website indiviually - for specific subjects it’s often more helpful to look at the A level subjects they ask for from doemstic applicants.

E.g. one slightly easier to get into which offers Russian and Linguistics and doesn’t ask for more than minimal language study prior is Queen Mary: https://www.qmul.ac.uk/undergraduate/coursefinder/courses/2020/russian-and-linguistics/#entry-requirements

Sheffield says https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/prospectus/courseDetails.do?id=QR602020 “if you are not studying a modern foreign language, the department will consider other evidence of aptitude for language learning”

Oxford would be tricky, unless they accept the summer course as being at A level standard, as Russian can only be studied ab intio if alongside another language which the student has done at A level, and Cambridge makes all students do two languages. But these may not have been being considered by this student anyway.

Thanks all. His top choices right now are U of Edinburgh, St Andrews, and Trinity in Dublin. The details on website for U of Ed state that applicants can start Russian ab initio, but must have studied another language–they do not specify that this must be a modern language, so my son has sent email to the department to see if his four years of Latin will ‘count’. He will probably take the SAT 2 test in Eng Lit in October, in case he is asked for this score, but plans to send his UCAS application in September.

Russian at TCD is always with another subject, and I am pretty sure it requires a modern language.

@VickiSoCal , what made Durham your favorite?

@AngieFM the literal castle helped. I like the college system.

According to the website, students wishing to study Russian must present with a language other than English at H4 level (does this mean 4 years of study?) with a grade of C or better. It does not specify modern language. We’ll ask the modern languages department to make sure.

H4 is the equivalent of A levels in Ireland.

So roughly speaking AP for US students.

Does this mean they’ll want to see his AP Latin test score, which he won’t take until spring next year?

Possibly. It’s quite normal for UK acceptances to be conditional on getting certain AP scores.

Russian Language at Edi is structured in such a way that they merge proficient and non-proficient students in year 2. It is very difficult for non-proficient students to catch up and holds proficient students back. I also did not see strong methodology in teaching Russian as a foreign language at Edi. Year 3 is study in Russia for all, and that is the most valuable part of the program. I would look at Dublin closely instead of Edi.

Thank you, this is helpful. Trinity has them take another course alongside Russian so not sure what he’d choose, probably history.

RL with another subject will be fine at Edi, too. For pure RL I would suggest one of the critical language centers in the US.

Just a quick update that my son heard from admissions person at U Edinburgh, and they will accept Latin as his language in applying for Russian, so long as he has studied it through 11th grade with a grade of B or better. Thanks

@VickiSoCal , I bet! I think my daughter will apply there, though Edi is her top choice so far.

Hello. DS is planning to apply to UK schools. His school only offers AP’s from junior year and he has 2 AP’s with a score of 4. He also took Math 2 subject test and got a 760. He’s doing 2 AP’s in Senior year but those scores might be moot for his 2020 application anyway.

Do they combine AP’s and SAT scores or does he need to take more to apply.

It depends on the university. Some will accept SAT2s or a combination of those and APs, as long as they are different subjects. APs he is taking but has not yet completed are definitely considered - his teacher rec needs to include predicted scores, and any offer is likely to be conditional on achieving a cerain score. What is he interested in studying, and which APs/subject tests is he doing/has he done?

Hi all–quick question re: how the schools are viewed/their value. My daughter is applying to Edinburgh for English Lit, and has identified Kings College London, Sussex, and Durham as other potential schools of interest. She also read about Edinburgh Napier, where she could study English and Acting, and the program looks wonderful (I’m a theatre professional, so I have some idea of what I’m looking for). What we’re wondering is whether anyone has a sense of how the school is regarded over there–any insights welcome! @VickiSoCal , @collegemom3717 , @jupiter98 @Conformist1688 ?? TIA!
