Ultra-strict parents?

So my friend has really strict parents that are always following up on her even though they are hundreds of miles away from Berkeley. They are always pressuring her to study (which is good) but to the point that it’s getting overbearing. If she’s outside at like 8pm she has to lie and say that she’s studying in her apartment or else her mom will guilt trip her and give her a lot of flak about it.

I’m just an outside observer so I don’t really know what’s going on with family but it seems to be affecting the way she interacts with people. I can tell that she’s kind of depressed and all the pressure she has been getting (premed) is taking a toll. I don’t think she can turn to her parents because it seems like they would be even more worried and possibly criticize her for being so weak or something; it’s like a death spiral.

Maybe this is normal for the student population but I was wondering if anyone has stories to share about this

Let me guess, she’s asian right?

The best thing to do it go to therapy. Her friends may want to help her but they wouldn’t know what’s the right thing to do. Seek professional advice…

If there’s anyone you know that has been in a similar situation, maybe it would help if they talked to her.

You go college now!

I just laughed.

Is this one of those cases of a student not knowing what they want to study, so they are premed because their parents are telling them to be?
