UM [University of Miami] vs UF for undergraduate business

Paging @jakmom

A few years later than the thread linked above, DS is facing the same decision - UM vs UF for undergraduate business (no specific business direction at this point).

UM states a 91% job placement. I can’t seem to find data for UF. Both seem to be semi-target schools

Has anyone made a choice between the two and have insight? Are there any company/job recruiters on this forum that can provide insight?

If difference in tuition is not a factor, and the main outcome of concern is mentorship and job placement, which school comes out ahead?

Here is the UF job board. I’m sure the b school or career center can give you further info.

They don’t show a knowledge rate - what % they are getting data on.

Note the different tabs on the link I put below. One friend’s son is at Goldman in Texas - a back office job.

Good luck.

I expect one can have a fine outcome at both schools. At some point it will be more about what the student accomplishes during the four years rather than which one of these fine schools they attend.

Does the student have a preference? Can you revisit before deciding (the accepted student days visits helped my S to clarify and feel confident about his college choice)?

Yes. Planning to revisit.

I typically agree with this…but when I hear semi-target, I think - Investment Banking.

If you believe all the tables (peak, college transitions), UF would not be semi - it would be target. And UF would not be semi.

Of course, you have kids from many schools not on any lists placing and just because you are at a target school doesn’t mean it’s easy to get a job in the area you want.

On College Transitions, top 30, UM is #2 but not int he top 30 when adjusted for enrollment - of course, we don’t know how many in the enrollment wanted that field.

Mergers & Acquisitions says Michigan is a target. Florida is not on their list. Can’t tell the date but some comments were this year.

Peak (2023) - Michigan is #8. Florida is #44.

Bottom line, there will be kids not on any list (U Houston does well in Houston) that get IB jobs and kids from schools on the list that strike out. So it’s personal matter - but one can’t ignore the $150K difference - you could - but you may or may not get something for your money.

Surely, you can find alums of both schools on linkedin and ask them about their journey.

Good luck.

I believe from the first post that for purposes of this thread UM refers to University of Miami (not UMichigan)

Am assuming you are instate. UF has almost twice the number of undergrads as Miami. And yes you are right that your kiddo may have some online classes and will have one summer semester on campus at UF. If $ is no issue, I’d say its personal preference for your kiddo. Let us know how the visits go.

PS- I did my grad work at UF and would still say its your kid’s personal preference.

Oooooh - never saw Miami on any list but they’ll place too. It’s a fine b school.

I see UM and think Michigan.

Here is Miami - I think they are showing an 87.8% knowledge rate but one can ask (12.2% unknown) - with 73% working and 14% in school (why, I’m not sure - hopefully not an MBA). They show 100% outcome but then say they have no info on 12.2% so…take it for what it’s worth0.

$67.5 median and $68K average salary for finance led by NY with 45 grads vs. 36 in Miami and 11 in Coral Gables - those are scary low salaries (to me) based on location.

Good luck

PS - when you open these, they generally are reset so you can set to finance.

Yes. In state

Thank you. Helpful!

I like both schools. My daughter graduated from UM and my son applied to both. U Miami has something called Bermont Carlin for the more ambitious finance majors. Those kids did especially well in banking and similar. My daughter works at Blackstone now, for example. Several of her peers in the program are at NYC banks.
