UMass Amherst class of 2024 Early Action Results

I got my decision. I’m a little shocked at this point and thought this was some sort of cruel joke. Could someone please give me insight as to why I was not accepted and only given a spot on the waitlist???

Starting to get REALLY concerned about my prospects of admission options…

is there a possibility that something was “off” with your essay or recommendations? Certainly doesn’t make sense to be rejected with those scores and grades.

@derakiii33 Do you have a sense of the GC or recs you received ? Did you change schools for any disciplinary issues.

Also make sure they had all of your required info and transcripts. Incomplete may be an automatic wl.

Or they just want to make sure you’re interested as the area of study is in high demand.

@derakiii33 - are you serious? (you maybe serious but I got confused looking at MIT ED and CalTech ED - both don’t do ED they do only EA - maybe a typo).
You have awesome stats - really surprising to get waitlisted as an instater

sorry for not getting in - I would suggest to take a good look at your overall app for any upcoming RD apps. Make sure there are no errors (any reporting blunders etc)…imo those stats should be an easy admit.

.

Those are the most impressive stats I have seen. I am baffled. I second the others with checking to see if your application was complete. Call admissions and inquire What other schools did you apply to?

@derakii33 Did you receive your decision today? Wondering if this weeks batch was today.

@hs2020dad Yes, I assure you I am serious. Also, a bit devastated considering I assumed this would be a safety for me. And yes, I meant to type EA for Caltech & MIT, my mistake. I tried to edit it but for whatever reason, it isn’t letting me.

@derakiii33 a lot of state schools reject people with stats that are TOO good, because they assume that it is the persons safety and won’t be going there if they get in. UVM has also been doing this a lot

I agree with 1234dcba, those stats are incredibly impressive and far exceed the requirements for UMASS Amherst. My guess is that, if your application was fully complete, it was a form of yield protection by the school as they thought you wouldn’t attend even if you got in.

@derakiii33 what about your extracurriculars? Certainly, you have the grades and scores. I’m sure something will happen for you soon. The problem with some top boarding and prep schools is they don’t take too many from the same one. It gives you a great education but might have you at a disadvantage on pure numbers.

Are both acceptances and rejections going out in batches or have only notifications thus far been acceptances?

@privatebanker As far as I know, my application was complete, and all of my transcripts/school reports were in. And not to sound pretentious, but I wouldn’t have been able to get into the private school I go to now if I had any discipline issues haha.

My CC got back to me today and he said it was a good chance it was due to yield protection. I really hate how some colleges do this. My philosophy is that if I am applying to a school, I am acknowledging to myself and them that there is at least a chance that I will attend there if I am admitted. Especially since I am in-state and finances are something to consider for my family. He is going to call them once we get back from break to see if any materials were missing that they needed, but he

Will any decisions come out today?

anything tomorrow?

Let’s hope!

Last year they sent some notifications on 12/26, but then the next batch wasn’t until 1/16! Let’s hope we don’t have to wait that long!!

So I just called UMass admissions to see if I could find out when the next batch will be. The woman I spoke with said she didn’t know, but that decisions would be going out throughout the month. :frowning: I am wondering if it will take longer this year because they are not doing deferrals.

I wonder if they will accept more or less people than normal because they aren’t doing deferrals

@WaitingOnCollegeResponses thanks for calling… i guess we couldn’t expect them to say anything different… previously they said they’d be done in “early January”… seems like they’re hedging their bets now
