Is it possible to switch from a shared room to a single apartment later?
Which residential area is good for a CS student?

I don’t think you can get a single apartment on campus, can you? You would have to move off campus. And once you move off campus, you aren’t allowed to move back on campus.
If you mean single room, it is technically possible but the odds are close to 0. If you don’t mind living in North Apartments (some freshmen get placed there), then you can have a guaranteed single in an apartment you’ll share with 4 other people. And @MADad, it is possible to come back onto campus after going off, it’s just harder to. And many CS students go to Northeast, Orchard Hill and I’ve met a fair number in the Honors College. I personally recommend Orchard Hill or the Honors College.
There are single rooms in freshman buildings (assuming you are one?), so you can put that down on your housing profile. Those aren’t apartments though. I agree that orchard hill, northeast, and honors are the best options
