Has anyone received their portal link yet?
There is almost no activity on this Forum right now. I have no direct connections to UMD at this time, my D graduated in 2018. Hopefully some current applicants will reply
if my kid ever finishes their essays or activity list and submits I will let you know;) ![]()
They did send scores and transcripts already, to make sure THAT, at least, is there in time:)
Question about recommendations - UMD has 1 teacher rec required, 3 optional and 4 additional optional recommendations (so you could technically have 8 total plus counselor rec). That seems excessive to me and more than most other colleges seem to want, but we are trying to figure out what makes the most sense. D27 wants to include her English and Chem teachers but also wants to include one additional one from someone related to her most significant extracurricular. I’m assuming that’s reasonable but would love feedback from anyone who has applied to UMD.
My own opinion is that 3 is a reasonable number of recommendations.
I didn’t watch for the Teacher Rec part recently (I should since we didn’t decide on 1 or 2 teacher recs yet) but an AO from UMD gave an info session and the school put it on youtube recently - she seemed pretty open on a lot of things…(I am not sure why link starts in middle! I can’t figure out - lol)
Thanks for posting! This is a video from my D’s school district, but I’ve never seen it. Interestingly, it implies you can’t submit more than one teacher and one other recommendation. We will keep recs to a minimum, but I don’t know why they allow 8 of them through the Common App!
weird! it definitely does say more on common app! argh argh
I feel like this page Office of Undergraduate Admissions | Freshman Applicants
makes no mention of “optional” either so they might be telegraphing they don’t want extra myself. That said, to me, it is hard for us not to send both teacher recs as I think they both will be good and not sure which is better
They probably just won’t read extra if they don’t want extra either though. I wish they just said no optional. make it cut and dry
How long did it take to get a portal link after your kid applied? We applied yesterday (Thurs)
