UMD Freshman Orientation

Our course registration happens at orientation at UMD, so I was recommended to go to an earlier one, however the Scholars specific orientation is later in June. I attached a screenshot of the schedule. I’m a civil engineering major for reference. Is it worth it to go to an earlier one just for registration, or to go to the one with my LLP?

You should attend the orientation tailored to your Scholars program. If you go to a general orientation, it won’t cover the details of your program. Don’t worry about registration — you won’t be at a disadvantage.

I concur. The Scholars orientation will have information not provided by the general one. You will also be able to get answers to any Scholars specific questions that you may have. If possible, I would recommend that one or both of your parents attend. Back when my D attended they had some parent specific sessions that were useful to us.

My daughter also registered at orientation. We had to go to a later one (I think the last one offered) because of a family wedding in the area. During June I noticed ALL the spots for the classes in her major were gone and some of the preferred sections for other classes she wanted were full.

When we got there, we found out the major dept had control of those spots and they block other students from signing up until the freshmen in that major had the opportunity to register, then the department releases the spots. As far as the other class she needed, she did get a not so great recitation section, but was able to change it once on campus during drop/add time.

It all works out. Don’t worry. There will be plenty of classes for you to take and you can always switch things around in August.
